When Beyoncé declared that she likes her "baby heir with baby hairs and Afros" in the song "Formation," I jumped for joy. Traditionally black and Latina subcultures have been proudly rocking their baby hairs since birth (myself included), so it seems like mainstream culture is finally jumping on the "baby hairs are awesome" bandwagon. But what does it even mean when someone refers to baby hairs?
Baby hairs are those small, very fine, wispy hairs located around the edges of your hair. They can be long, short, or even curly, depending on your hair type and texture. Typically found on children (hence the word "baby"), they can also follow you into adulthood.
While it always seems that baby hairs match perfectly with your hair as a child, all of that can change as you grow. Sometimes baby hairs can be downright unruly and difficult to manage when it comes to trying to fashion them into a style that matches the rest of your hair. Just like bangs, oil and product buildup on baby hairs can sometimes lead to breakouts on your forehead. This is exactly what happened to Kim Kardashian. The reality starlet confessed on her website that she lasered away her baby hairs because of breakouts—a decision she now laments because she thinks they look youthful. I agree: Let your baby hairs live! As you can see from this roundup, they are a natural way to add stylish flair to any hairstyle.
FKA twigs
If your baby hairs are on the longer side, let singer FKA twigs be your muse. Slick them down with a flake-free holding gel, like Eco Professional Styling Gel Olive Oil, and then shape them into waves along the side of your head using a fine-toothed comb.
Kim Kardashian
Maybe she didn't like them, but we think Kim Kardashian's baby hairs looked great! When wearing your hair down like this, you can always cut down on the baby-hair frizz by spritzing them with a humidity-blocking spray, like Redken Frizz Dismiss Lightweight Smoothing Lotion Spray.
Rihanna
Take the high road (literally) and a section off your hair into a high, messy ponytail. Let the back hang loose and simply slick baby hairs right into the high ponytail mix for a stylish look.
Givenchy, fall 2015
The fashion house paid homage to baby hairs by pairing them with a sleek middle part and low, pinned-up braids.
Katy Perry
Even if you don't actually have baby hairs (hey, we can't all be so lucky), you can still create your own look, like singer Katy Perry did at the Givenchy fall 2015 show. Part a small piece of your hair on the side, and using a fine-toothed comb and hair gel, shape it into waves.
Chilli (circa 2003)
When it comes to baby hairs, we like to call Chilli (of the '90s girl group TLC) the baby-hair queen. Since her arrival toonthe music scene, whether her hair is curly or straight, she's never strayed from showcasing the best baby-hair looks over the years.
North West
She might still be a baby, but no roundup of baby-hair looks would be complete without North West in the mix. Also, please take note of how her naturally curly ponytail has just the perfect amount of puff to it. Adorable!
Jennifer Lopez
Never one to shy away from her natural roots, we love how the singer paired her baby hairs with cornrows—a perfect summer hairstyle.
Kylie Jenner
Just because Kim lasered off her baby hairs doesn't mean the rest of the clan has to follow suit. Kylie seems to be embracing hers. (Plus, you can never go wrong with pairing baby hairs with a sleek topknot.)
Tyra Banks
Loc extensions (much like braids) make styling a breeze and, as Tyra Banks shows off here, easily fit in with baby hairs. Use a small, boar-bristle brush and an edge smoother, like this one from Carol's Daughter, to keep them looking smooth and fresh.
Gisele Bündchen
In case you were thinking that baby hairs might not look great with long, wavy hair, supermodel Gisele shows us that indeed, they most certainly do.
DKNY spring 2015
Take a cue from the fashion runway of DKNY and pair pigtails, a funky part, and intricately styled baby hairs for a cool, around-the-way look.
