Editorial Reviews

Review

"Intense, acutely observed. A story that is at once enlightening and baffling. While it is clearly better for Stephen Dubner if his turbulent stays quiet, I think readers of this wonderful book will rather hope that a continual measure of unsettlement inspires him to write more.""-- The New York Times Book Review""In addition to being deeply moved by "Turbulent Souls, " I am full of admiration for Stephen J. Dubner's honesty, the complexity of his intelligence, his commitment to understanding his parent's history, and his refusal to oversimplify."-- Mary Gordon, author of" The Shadow Man"

"A deeply affecting story...[Dubner's] engrossing book will interest not only serious Jews and Catholics, but all whose lives have been torn by interfamilial religious schisms".

-- Kirkus Reviews

I loved this book! Dubner has a real talent for telling stories, and the stories he tells are extremely interesting. Much of the book is spent exploring his parents' life histories, especially with how they relate to their religious choices. The rest of the book Dubner spends exploring his own faith. An excellent read for the religious and non-religious alike.

Interesting story. The first part of the book can be a little confusing as the author switches back between his mother's family and his father's family. Not to mention some of the characters change their names mid-way through the book. But all in all, if you're interested in religion, religious choices, or family dynamics, you'll enjoy this well-written book.
