Product description

NEW Combo BLUWAVS CD and FLAC FILE

Amazon.com

The second of three Allison albums issued on Motown's Gordy subsidiary in the 1970s, Luther's Blues captures the guitarist's uncovered-wire sound in its full glory. The crescendo ending of "Let's Have a Little Talk," one of five Allison originals here, is more than another standard variation on crowd-pleasing clichés. It's an apocalyptic, blues-wailing roar, with Allison's pleading vocal at its core. Berry Gordy turns up in the composer credits for one tune, "Someday Pretty Baby," which, along with "Part Time Love," trawls the company's early raw-edged back catalog. Even the funk-flavored "K.T."--an attempted hit single?--fits the mood. The three bonus tracks on this exemplary remaster nearly double the original LP's length, with a raw version of Freddy King's "San-Ho-Zay" glowing alongside an alternate version of Allison's "Bloomington Closing" and a lengthy medley from the 1973 Ann Arbor Blues Festival. --Rickey Wright

LUTHER'S BLUES showcases Luther Allison's guitar play and 'Otis Redding comparison' vocals.
This is a must blues fans. I have become a huge blues fans since surviving the "80's music scene" and of all the music I own this LUTHER'S BLUES CD could have THE best collection of Bonus Songs (of them all) led by a 1973 offering from the Ann Arbor Blues Festival. This live "Medley" runs 19 minutes on its own and displays Luther's B.B King influence. "San-Ho-Zaay" and "Bloomington Revisited" are the other two rollicking Bonus songs.

Besides the 30 minutes of Bonus tracks is the 7 minute "Let's Have a Little Talk" from the original album and the funk of bursting trumpet horns on "K.T" offering a different sound and surprise standout on this guitar, blues driven collection.
The original album running time was 39 minutes.

LUTHER'S BLUES was recorded before his move (to France) just as his local (U.S.) popularity began to wane. This was his second Motown release.
Luther also plays harmonica licks on two songs including Junior Parker's "Driving Wheel".
LUTHER'S BLUES got better (to me) on the 3rd listen some months later prompting this Feb. 2017 rewrite.

This is a great album from a great Blues artist who I feel didn't get the recognition he deserved for a long time. You can feel the Blues infuse your soul as you listen. Luther had a playing style that could get into your soul as well as any of his contemporaries. This remaster does the 1974 release a lot of justice, and the bonus tracks are just icing on the cake. When the live bonus track from the 1973 Ann Arbor Blues Festival starts up, you'd think you were listening to the Allman Brothers until Luther sings.

Bottom line: buy this this album, you won't regret it.

All blues music meets my expectations in one form or another. The music of 'blues' must be discovered, it is not out there for everyone and not everyone hears what is played.

If you're reading this, then you are probably already a Luther fan. Good songs, lyrics, and great guitar playing are very evident on this one. Perhaps a little too much soul music ... almost disco-sounding. 3 1/2 stars ...
