I run several marine aquariums. I manually test 6 parameters on each tank twice a week, have tried every single brand of test kits over the last 5 years or so, have owned automated testing systems (and found them completely inadequate and generally inaccurate), and routinely send in samples for ICPOES testing to confirm my manual results.
This is clearly the most accurate hobbyist test currently available for magnesium. The test is easy to perform with a clear endpoint to the titration. Salifert recently shortened the test process by one step, making it even simpler to perform, without loss of accuracy.
Some may be tempted to switch to the new Hanna magnesium checker. Don't do it. Overall, Hanna makes great hobbyist checkers, and they are my first choice for several parameters. Unfortunately, not so for the Hanna magnesium checker, which consistently gives reading of about 100 ppm lower than the actual value. I was frankly stunned how badly they flubbed this one, considering how good their gear is overall.

New version?
The exp.date is 2025 so is it a new version than the older one? There is only 2 liquid bottles. MG-1 and MG-2. NO powder container in this kit! The instructions paper does not show any powder to add… The instructions were a little hard to understand, and when I searched online all videos and explanations I found (including from Salifert it self) SHOWS 3 ingredients in the kit! MG-1 MG-2 (powder) and Mg-3….. what’s going on!

You must drop the reagent into the vial and then when it changes color, your readout is based off of what you have left in the syringe. So, for accurate measure, if you use the whole syringe of reagent, you have a perfect level of 1500ppm... if you used all but .3 like I did, you're right around 1440ppm...
Product arrived outside of the box with the contents in bubble wrap and I ended up having a perfect box with protected test kit in bubble wrap!!

Make sure you follow directions on this one! I read direction 6 incorrectly, thinking that you hold the syringe tip up because they didn't want us to spill the reagent every where. Well at first I was calculating the result by how much I was putting in and couldn't get the test to read accurate.Reviewed in the United States on August 25, 2017
