The latest addition to this city-centre hospital site in Barcelona’s Eixample district, the new building had to complete a block occupied by early 20th- century buildings by architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner.
It is also the termination of a route leading from Gaudí’s Sagrada Familia (which is finally nearing completion). The architects were therefore faced with the twin challenges of creating a key piece of urbanism and satisfying the sophisticated functional requirements of a hospital. Their solution was to create a large building for consultations and central services which acts as a site boundary, and a smaller in-patient zone designed as a series of fingers within the green space separating the new hospital from the old.
