OG takes 1win’s spot at ESL One Birmingham

The tournament organizer announced today that OG will take part in the upcoming ESL One Birmingham. 1Win was unable to obtain visas in order to attend the event, hence the decision was made. In the meantime, OG was able to go because the next best team in the qualifiers was also unable to obtain a visa. Professional Dota 2 has long struggled with visa problems. The ESL One Birmingham Major appears to be the same. Check out this information and more of our articles to help your dota 2 betting adventures!

Four of the twelve teams will come from the Western EU, which has recently dominated other areas. The only Eastern European team competing in the ESL One Birmingham Major is Team Spirit. But it appears that neither ESL nor the organizations have given it much of a try. The ESL awarded the slot to the next runner-up from the EEU qualifiers, but they were also unable to attend. Additionally, the ESL extended the deadline for teams to secure their visas (though it is unclear by how much). The OG team is no stranger to visa problems that impact its lineups. Mikhail “Misha” Agatov, the team captain at the time, was unable to compete with OG in the ESL Stockholm Major or the ESL One Malaysia in 2022, events that OG ultimately won. But because OG has already stated that they will be able to attend in the UK, there shouldn’t be any issues this time. Although OG’s roster is still pending, it seems quite likely that Timado will start at number one, like he has in previous competitions.

OG lost 1-3 to Tundra Esports in the Grand Finals after placing 2nd in the ESL One Birmingham Closed qualifications. The squad performed very flawlessly for most of the bracket until they lost to Entity in a game. They did, however, prevail in the series before losing to Tundra Esports in the championship game. 1win had won the Eastern Europe Closed qualifier, which allowed them to enter the competition. They started the competition with a loss against Team Klee, but their impressive performance in the lower bracket allowed them to advance to qualification.

At first glance, ESL One Birmingham 2024’s choice to award OG 1Win’s place seems to be correct. But it appears that the Eastern European squad’s backers are not content. They also criticized ESL for allowing OG to take up their seat when it was purported that every player at 1Win had their passports and visas ready. KheZu responded by claiming that 1Win missed the deadline for their visas and refuting the whole “esl stole our slot” narrative. It remains to be seen if ESL made the right decision or not.

Starting on April 22, ESL One Birmingham will run for 7 days, concluding on April 28. Some of the top teams in the league compete in this tournament with a million dollar prize fund up for grabs. $300,000 in prize money goes to the winner, while $175,000 goes to the runners-up. The competition consists of a Group Stage, Playoffs, and a double-elimination bracket used to cut down the teams.
