The Black Keys‘ Patrick Carney is typically behind a drum set on Billboard Hot 100 hits like “Lonely Boy” and “Fever,” but in a new Vice News Tonight segment, he’s front and center. For “Patrick Carney’s High Standards Music Corner,” the drummer listens to new releases from OneRepublic, Lady Gaga, Norah Jones and Testament and gives his opinion on each track.
“I don’t hate that. I wouldn’t buy that, but I wouldn’t mind if it came on in Abercrombie & Fitch,” he says after the first song. When informed that it’s OneRepublic’s latest single “Kids,” he smiles. “I’m so embarrassed I liked OneRepublic.”

When Gaga’s “Perfect Illusion” kicks in, it doesn’t take Carney long to form an opinion. “I’m lost because the guitar at the top of the song sounds so sh–ty — it sounds like Hulk Hogan is playing the guitar.” He comes around to the song in the end, however. “The thing is, that song’s growing on me.”
