Where would we be without our humble servo pie warmer? Even though you know it might not ~flourish~ over the next four hours that you're in the car, it's impossible to resist the temptation of a Four 'N' Twenty when you're filling up with petrol.

When you go into the servo to get your pie, it's almost inhumanly possible to go past the fridge without grabbing a chocolate milk. They just somehow go together so well.

Road trips, especially rural ones, are no time to be a coffee snob. Petrol station coffee certainly isn't the best, but 7-11's machines actually make a pretty good drop. Plus, they're $1 a cup. Beggars can't be choosers.

While caffeine is king for keeping everyone awake and in good spirits on a road trip, nothing can beat the dazzling highs you get just from sniffing a bag of freshly-opened Party Mix.

The only downside is trying not to let the flavour crumbs drop all throughout the car.

It's more of a token attempt at health, but it's good to have something fresh to snack on after a day of drive-thru food and energy drinks.

If your road trip takes you past farms or fruit orchards, you better pull over as soon as you see a roadside stall. The prices are often better than fruit from the supermarket, plus it's way tastier and you're supporting farmers. Love it!

Carman's muesli bars are good, but you can't beat the original. Though you might have to fight over flavours – do you go choc chip, forest fruits or yoghurt top?

On an early morning road trip, there's nothing better than a fresh bacon egg McMuffin and a couple of hash browns.

At some point in the afternoon, the sun is beating through the windows and you just know it's time to pull over for a crisp lemonade Icy Pole. Though chances are, you're at a general store in the middle of nowhere and they charge you $2.50 for something that should be 80 cents.

They used to be the things we begged Mum to get while grocery shopping, but now that we're grown up, we know that one of the only thing these sticks are good for is being a salty road trip snack.

On your return journey home, there's bound to be at least one person in the car who's in desperate need of an ice-cold Powerade.

Sure, biscuits aren't normally a road trip food but if you want a tasty hit of sugar and carbs to get you through to your next stop, these are your best bet. They're not going to melt like Tim Tams or Mint Slices, but they're way more exciting than a Milk Arrowroot or Nice.

If you live near Baker's Delight, it's always a good idea to pick up a six-pack of these before hitting the road. You'll probably put them in the boot and fully forget about them until 3 p.m. when someone complains about being hungry. They're always a crowd pleaser!

But anyone who calls them "bacon and cheese rolls" can get out of the car and walk home.
