International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA)  has introduced Farmers to the Black Soldier Fly (BSF) Products.

The IITA introduced farmers to the product at a workshop.

The project, titled ‘Chicken, Fish and Pig Feed and Organic Fertiliser Value Chain Development’, using BSF-based urban bio-waste in DRC, Ghana, Mali, and Niger is an initiative led by IITA with funding from the Norwegian Agency for Development and Cooperation, NORAD.

IITA will work with partners like CSIR and BNARI in Ghana, WORLDVEG in Benin, IER in Mali, INRAN in Niger, AALI, INERA and UNIKIN in DRC to implement the activities of the project.

The farmers, comprising poultry, fish, pig, and vegetable farmers from different parts of Accra were taken through an overview of the IITA BBEST Project by the communications officer, Ms Francisca Ocloo, who elaborated objectives and the activities that will be implemented under the project.

She also highlighted the expected results and some of the benefits of the BSF products.

The project is based on the 3 R principles: “Reduce, Recycle and Reuse.’’

This means “the organic waste generated can be recycled and be used for other purposes,’’ Ms Ocloo explained.
