Look Back at Tanya Tucker's Unbelievable Life and Career in Photos
The "Delta Dawn" singer is a country icon.
Known as a leading female voice in the "outlaw" sub-genre of American country music, Tanya Tucker has had a lengthy and prosperous career in the industry. Since the release of her first hit "Delta Dawn" at the age of 13, Tucker has been captivating audiences with her raspy voice and stripped-down sound, but she has yet to be graced with the honor of a Grammy. As the 62nd annual show approaches, take a look back at the music legend's greatest accomplishments through the years, then tune in to see if the 61-year-old brings home the hardware.
Early beginnings
Tanya's father, Jesse 'Beau' Tucker, first recognized his daughter's talent at age eight (as well as the talents of her sister, artist La Costa) and put tooth and nail into promoting their fledgling careers. After numerous hiccups, he found success for both his daughters in the early 1970s thanks to key performances alongside country acts like Judy Lynn. Tucker is pictured here with country music legend, Merle Haggard.
A debut hit
A young Tanya Tucker burst onto the scene with help from famed producer, Billy Sherrill, who produced her hit debut studio album Delta Dawn. The single from the album was released in 1972 and helped Tucker make her presence known at the tender age of 13. The single made the US Billboard Hot 100 list and peaked at number 6 on the US Billboard Hot Country Singles charts. She was nominated for a Grammy in 1973 for Best Female Country Vocal Performance.
Her career picks up steam
While promoting Delta Dawn, Tanya performed all throughout the country circuit, stopping at places like Great Falls, Montana in 1974 (pictured here). Tanya eventually released another studio album titled Would You Lay with Me (In a Field of Stone) which included a controversial single making her more famous then she already was. Shortly after, Tucker was signed to MCA Records.
Tucker becomes a household name
After signing to MCA records, Tucker went on to release more best-selling albums with hits like "Lizzie and the Rainman," which peaked at No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot Country Singles charts. This essentially cemented her place as a country music staple and not a one-hit wonder. Tanya hadn't even reached 18 years old.
Ready for change
By 1978, Tucker was ready for a change! While not completely retiring her country roots, Tucker wanted to bring her style of music to a broader audience. She did this by producing the highly successful rock-country album, TNT. She did receive some criticism from her original fans, but this album landed her a Grammy nomination for Best Rock Vocal Performance and was certified gold by the RIAA.
Dream lover
Soon after turning 18, Tucker met Glen Campbell (44) a then famous country star in his own right. The couple quickly garnered the attention of numerous tabloids because of their often public displays of fighting and arguing. They even released a single together titled "Dream Lover," which they performed at the 1980 Republican National Convention. Parting ways less than a year after dating, this couple burned bright and quick.
Nickel Dreams: My Life
In 1997 Tucker released her first book, an autobiography called "Nickel Dreams: My Life," in which she recounts her prior relationships, successes and issues with substance abuse. Here, she promotes the book in an interview with Jay Leno.
Strong enough to bend
In November 2014, The Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum in Nashville opened the "Tanya Tucker: Strong Enough to Bend" exhibittion, showcasing notable pieces from Tucker's past and memories from throughout her career. The exhibit remained open for a year.
Tanya spills juicy details
In January of 2019, Tanya appeared on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, where she recounted her rejection of Elvis Presley's advances back in the day. "I didn't want to be one of the [girls.] I'm one of the boys," she said of the time that Elvis tried to kiss her during one of his concerts.
While I'm Livin'
Though she hadn't released an album for almost a complete decade, Tanya surprised fans with While I'm Livin' in 2019, which saw critical and commercial success. She's up for four awards at the 62nd Annual Grammys, including Best Country Album, Best Country Song, Best Country Solo Performance, and Song of the Year for "Bring My Flowers Now," which she co-wrote with Brandi Carlile.
