Destiny developer Bungie has confirmed that characters and stats from the game's beta tests will not be carried over to the final release.

The studio said that allowing players to retain their beta Guardians would have resulted in technical issues due to the amount of change the title has undergone.

"Since the beta, we've continued to tune and adjust the game," said designer Tyson Green. "The way you earn experience has been adjusted up and down a bunch of times. Items have been added and removed. New features toggled.

"Although there's no single monumental change, the sum of the tweaks leaves characters from the beta build in strange shape that would be confusing at best, broken at worst."

More than 4.6 million players took part in the Destiny beta, holding 88.4 million matches between them. No major gameplay alterations have been introduced since the trials.

The full game will debut as part of a white PS4 console bundle on September 9, along with a release on Xbox 360, Xbox One and PS3.
