Edmunds spotlight: Return of the manual transmission

While Mini has confirmed that a manual transmission won't be offered in the next-generation two-door Cooper arriving for 2025, the stick isn't dead in the four-door Hardtop. Well, it was dead, but it's not anymore. Global supply chain issues prompted Mini to remove the manual transmission from the order books last year, but with those hurdles cleared, the stick is back for 2024. Also returning after a hiatus (due to similar issues) is the base Classic trim, which lowers the price of entry compared to last year's abbreviated lineup.

Competitors to consider

Jolly as it may be, the Mini Hardtop 4 Door doesn't have a monopoly on fun. Competitors like the Honda Civic and Mazda 3 also offer plenty of driving enjoyment and better ride quality than the sometimes brittle-riding Cooper and boast more spacious and comfortable interiors. Volkswagen's GTI is another excellent choice. None can match the Mini's level of available personalization, but some buyers might find them to be a better fit.

Which Hardtop 4 Door does Edmunds recommend?

We'd choose the Cooper S for its extra oomph, and the midtier Signature trim nets some meaningful upgrades, including a panoramic sunroof, keyless entry and ignition, and heated front seats. It also opens up enough color combinations to satisfy our creative impulses.

MINI Hardtop 4 Door models

The 2024 Mini Cooper Hardtop 4 Door is a small hatchback that is available in two versions. The Cooper is powered by a turbocharged 1.5-liter inline-three with 134 horsepower and 162 lb-ft of torque. The Cooper S gets a turbo 2.0-liter four-cylinder making 189 horsepower and 206 lb-ft. Both are available with either a six-speed manual or a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic and are exclusively front-wheel-drive.

The Cooper and Cooper S are both available in three trim levels: Classic, Signature and Iconic. Standard equipment on each trim is largely the same between the Cooper and Cooper S, but the S offers more optional equipment at each level.
