This is an original antique chromolithographic book plate, which has been taken from a disbound copy of "Alice in Wonderland” by Lewis Carroll, dated 1916.
The print is a beautifully detailed chromolithograph, printed on semi-glossed paper, blank on the reverse. This print would look lovely if mounted and framed, either on its own, or in association with other of her imaginative illustrations.
Approximate print size: 9.5 x 6 inches (24 cm x 15.5 cm).
As with all items of this age, there may be some slight characteristic foxing, toning or marking but the condition of this one is good, and the image is clear and bright.
Margaret Tarrant (1888 - 1959) was an English illustrator who specialised in fairy tales, children and religious themes. She was born in London, and studied at the local School of Art in Clapham. Her career started when she was 20, with the publication of Charles Kingsley's The Water Babies. This continued in the fairy theme in The Pond Fairies, The Forest Fairies, and The Twilight Fairies. She was long associated with the Medici Society with many of her children's books and postcards were published by the organization. Indeed the Society sent her on a journey to Palestine to research material for religious illustrations, which she worked on during her time at the Guildford School of Art.
