About this ebook
INTRODUCTION
If there is any topic in the world that would never get
old, it is the topic of leadership. This is basically
because leadership would continue to exist as long as
the world exists. Even if corporate organizations go
extinct (which is most likely to never happen), the
family structure will never go out. There is always a
need to lead when people are gathered together
towards the same goals.
Since leadership has no expiry date, it is important to
always remind ourselves what it truly is and how it
should be done. Yes, there is no specific approach to
leadership, but there are basic personalities and
characters that shape and drive leadership. These
are the things that you would learn as you read
through this book.
This book is also important because it brings back the
basic and effective personalities that have been
undermined by vain trends on social media. There is
an assurance that after reading this book, you will
become a more respected person and an effective
leader because you will produce results.
Do have a great time reading!

CHAPTER ONE
––––––––
THE CONCEPT OF LEADERSHIP
The challenge of leadership is to be strong, but not rude; be kind, but not weak; be bold, but not bully; be thoughtful, but not lazy; be humble, but not timid; be proud, but not arrogant; have humor, but without folly.
— Jim Rohn
Have you ever seen a man or a woman whose first name is 'Leader'? How about the last name? Maybe John Leader, or Mary Leader. There is no family with such name but if there is, who will be the leader in the family institution? It has to be one person who is capable of filling into that position, not everyone at the same time. However, they all go by the name Leader. What am I trying to point out here is that you are never a leader because someone calls you 'Leader', not even if you call yourself 'Leader'. Nobody is born as a leader. People grow into leaders while nurturing the skill as they grow.
Everybody wants to become a leader, and there's nothing wrong with that. But everything will be wrong if you want to become a leader for the wrong reasons. Everyone wants to become a leader because leadership is cool. That is a wrong reason because you will soon find out that leadership is not all glamour, but more travail. Leadership is not easy, especially when you are just starting out.
To clarify what reasons are right and what reasons are wrong, we have to go through the concept of leadership. So, let's start by defining leadership.
What is Leadership?
––––––––
We will go through a number of popular definitions of leadership, to get the whole hang of it.
According to the U.S Army, leadership is a process by which a person influences others to accomplish a mission
(U.S. Army, 1983). This is quite straight to the point; connecting leadership, influence and results together.
Mindy Gibbins-Klein, the founder of REAL Thought
Leaders also opined that, "Leadership is having a
vision, sharing that vision and inspiring others to support your vision while creating their own." This definition points out the fact leadership is not slavery. So, when you lead people, don't expect them not to have their own dreams and chase them. You should help them achieve their dreams actually.
Another definition of leadership is given by Lisa Cash Hanson, the CEO of Snuggwugg. Hanson said, Leadership is the ability to guide others without force into a direction or decision that leaves them still feeling empowered and accomplished.
Given the circumstances around bad leaderships, we can see in this definition that forcing people to achieve a goal is not leadership. Motivating them to achieve that goal and to stay productive is more like it.
Daphne Mallory, a family business expert also defined
leadership thus; Leadership is the art of serving others by equipping them with training, tools and people as well as your time, energy and emotional intelligence so that they can realize their full potential, both personally and professionally.
Bring all of these definitions together, we can point out some things that are common such as goals, influence, vision, motivation, equipment and enablement. These are some of the things that define leadership and that express the concept of leadership. Let's go through them one after the other.
Goals. A leader has to be leading his or her followers to a certain goal. There must be something they are trying to achieve as a team. If there is nothing of such, the leadership is unnecessary and fruitless. Leadership is goal-oriented because the leader is there mainly to drive, organize and lead people to a certain destination or goal.
Influence. Leadership is a process of influencing
people without forcing them or coercing them, to achieve a unified and defined goal, while helping them build their personal goals and dreams. This means that leadership is not slavery, it shows good examples to a person or a group of persons, giving them benefiting reasons to achieve the goal, and to become a better person.
Vision. There is no point of leading people if there is no vision. Vision is not just a factor that determines the effectiveness of leadership, but one of the reasons for leadership. A leader needs to be able to attach a vision to the common goal and communicate it effectively to the members of his or her team or the followers.
Motivation. Most of the world's greatest leaders are
self-motivated people. This is important because goals are not easy to achieve, and people will many times lose their drive. A leader needs to be able to motivate, and not coerce the followers to put in more work towards achieving the common goal.
Equipment. Leadership is incomplete without
equipment; not necessarily in appliances and devices but in every sense of the word. Leaders should not just tell people what to do. Leaders and leaderships should equip followers or team members with the equipment they need to move forward towards achieving the goal.
Enablement. Lastly, most leaderships fail in giving their followers a life outside the common cause. In
––––––––
such cases, the followers become redundant when the project is accomplished. Leaderships are supposed to enable followers to build a progressive and successful life even as they work for the common goal of the team.
Against popular belief, great leaders are not born or
destined to be great. They are just born like every other person in the world. It is what they do after they have been born that shapes them into the leaders that they eventually become. Leaders are not deities, neither are they super humans. They have just chosen to be in charge of their lives, and to make impact in the places that they can.
Leadership is intentional. It is a decision to build
oneself through a continuous process of self-mastery, formal and informal learning, practical training and experience. All these elements equip a leader with tools he or she would need to help, guide and lead other people towards a unified goal, no matter how difficult it might seem. A leader has to be proven by knowledge, experience and will, before he can successfully take other people on a journey to a place they might not even know. All of these do not happen
by wishing and thinking about it, but by doing; by learning and working towards the desired goal. One more thing about preparing oneself for leadership is that it is not something you can end or stop at a point. In leadership, you learn before the job, learn at the job, and learn even after the achievement of the goals.
FACTORS OF LEADERSHIP
––––––––
There are four major factors in leadership. If one is missing, then the rest are incapacitated. They work hand in hand to create what we have come to know as leadership.
Leader - Like everyone else, you will ask; what is leadership with a leader?
A leader must be aware of his position as a leader, and those who are being led by him must also be aware that he is their leader. He must have an honest understanding of who he really is, his strengths, weaknesses, abilities, and his knowledge. A leader is only fully a leader when his leadership is acknowledged and supported by his followers. He must be able to gain their trust, lead them to the achievement of the collective goal, and
help them grow individually. A leader is one who has proven himself to be
