Erik Truffaz

Since the 90s, the Swiss trumpeter and composer Erik Truffaz has developed his own contemporary jazz-Esperanto with post-bop, modal jazz, fusion and Miles Davis as building blocks, joined with electronica, hip-hop, rock, pop and folk music from various parts of the world.

At ten he started playing in his father’s dance band. At 16, he was exposed to the music of Miles Davis through the modal milestone Kind of Blue. Davis’ music led him to study music theory, composition and music history, and during his studies he alternated Western art music with jazz. Although it was Miles’ acoustic band that got Truffaz on the jazz trail, it was Miles’ electric second quintet that got him obsessed.

Erik Truffaz is heavily inspired by the Miles Quintet with Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, Tony Williams and Wayne Shorter, but he has the courage, talent and willpower to develop his own music based on Miles’ work.

On the latest record Rollin’, released in 2023, Erik Truffaz and his new band reinterpret film music, Nino Rota’s La Strada, Miles Davis’ Ascenseur pour l’Echafaud from Bunuel’s film of the same name and Ennio Morricone’s Le Casse. To mention a few. Festive evening and anything but a note on the door would be a disapproval of the jazz audience in the capital.
