INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Police officials on Thursday morning named the city's latest homicide victim.

James Vester, 32, was shot and killed Wednesday on the west side of Indianapolis, near West 10th Street and North Girls School Road. Vester is from Lizton.

A police source told 24-Hour News 8 that Vester may have been in the area to buy an iPad when he was shot. According to Vester's friends, the father and husband went to to the area to purchase an iPad for his parents that he found on Craigslist.

Vester spent a large part of his life in service. In 2006, the First Class Sergeant served a tour of duty in Iraq, when he made it back on U.S. soil he served with the Indiana National Guard as a diesel mechanic. In addition to those duties he served on the ceremonial team honoring those who died in service.

"Some people wanted to do it for the accolades, but Jim wanted to pay respect," said Sgt. Major Tony Williams with the Indiana National Guard.

Friends of the family, started a fundraising campaign for Vester's wife and son. You can help the family by logging on here.

As far as the investigation, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officials described it as a "very active" case and asked anyone with information to call police. Suspect description is very vague. Anonymous tips can be called in to Crime Stoppers at 317-262-TIPS. Text tips can be sent to 274627 with INDYCS and the tip.

While the investigation continues others want to remember the man who gave his all for his family and country.

"He had a huge heart. He was the type of person you could always depend on," said Williams.
