First....let me say that I've been affiliated with Goodwill and served on the Board, although not at this time. As soon as I saw the article in the FNP I knew that the CEO's salary would be questioned. It is "in line" with other CEO's at Goodwill's of a similar size, nationally. Goodwill Industries of Monocacy Valley is a $12 million+ business and will grow even more with Mr. Meyer's direction. The donations that Goodwill receives from the community, and are sold in the stores, fuel the programs that Goodwill provides to people with disabilities and disadvantaged conditions. Goodwill trains, puts people to work and helps them gain employment. I've been there. I've seen it. I've lived it. Don't believe me? Then volunteer. Help teach a class. Be a coach. Serve on the Board. Get involved. I guarantee it will change your perspective.

Mr McCanner--

Thanks for joining us. You are the perfect person to tell us exactly what percentage of Goodwill's income from sales goes to fund the good programs that you mention.

I'm sure you understand the questioning attitude that has arisen in recent years because of the proliferation of pseudo-charities that spend only a small fraction of their income on actual programs. I've heard from some that spend less than 20 percent of their income on that. Some even less.

I always ask phone solicitors about that and, amazingly, they often divulge embarrassingly low percentages that go to things other than fund-raising costs.

That's quite a salary for a small non-profit. It's a shame how many people have lost/are losing their jobs to pay his salary.

A SMALL non-profit?

Coffeesup

Yes - this Goodwill only covers Frederick and Carroll County.

Just wondering what everyone thinks a fair salary is for this position? Sounds like he going to be managing a lot of stores.

Boyce Rensberger

His pay does not seem to be much out of line, especially given the generally inflated compensation packages many CEOs get.

There's a fascinating table of top CEO pay packages and the ratio of those to the median pay for workers in that company. It's here: https://www.glassdoor.com/research/ceo-pay-ratio/

Goodwill DOES have the best prices on used underwear! [thumbup]

Must be great to operate a string of retail stores that pay nothing to stock their shelves and racks. And that pay very little to their employees. Gotta be worth $177,000 a year. The president and CEO of Goodwill's overall business was paid $725,000 in 2011.

Riders of the Storm

Boyce is right on this one! Totally unacceptable that the CEO would make that much money when Goodwill employees are paid next to nothing. Hope everyone thinks twice before donating to this "non-profit" organization. Only profit for the white collar staff!!

What about locally owned thrift shops? Would it be better to donate used goods to them? Does anyone know?

junkmail1291

Select Seconds on East Patrick Street takes donations & is all volunteers. The $ raised goes to FMH.

Boyce Rensberger

Reply to junkmail1291: Would that be the same FMH that already can afford to spend many tens of thousands on advertising in the FNP and other local publications? The same one that can afford to keep building more and more clinics around the area?

I remember a while ago at one of Frederick Goodwills a special needs employee wet his pants and instead of just giving him a pair off the racks to change in to they sent him home.

177000.00 what nonsense and revamping stores? Where is the outrage over this big salary? I guess its different because they give back less to the community then those evil big corporations with evil ceo's with high salaries, but its ok since they hide behind the non-profit status and use, yes use people with special needs and disabilities for employees and take advantage of a the fair labor standards act of 1930 so employers that hire people with special needs to pay people with special needs a subminimum hourly wage. Its ok, they will use the standard strategy of "tools to help the disabled" This group comes begging for donations from hard working people and those evil big corporations that don't hide who they are and don't hide behind fake corporate status.

Think

An outrageous salary! Where is the concern for the disabled?

Well, looks like the good ol' days of having a REAL 'shopping experience' at a Goodwill are over. It was always fun to find a vintage treasure amongst the racks of clothing (of course, it can still happen if you have a good eye). Now their stores are as anti-septic as a WalMart ...sorry, hipsters.
