Volume 1: 4 Stars -

Who knew that Prince Valiant was so awesome back then? Full of wonderfully cliche and hardcore lines (such as "This was but a mild adventure and it was necessary to kill only seven enemies in the way of business") this strip really was a roaring adventure for a long while. Of course, with lines like that, it is easy to see that a great deal of this strip is written in the "tell, don't show" fashion and for that I am annoyed. Yes, even though certain preparations take many weeks before any battle is started, most of the prep work and the battles are explained away in quick sentences. To write this book out without the wonderfully detailed drawings would result in the most boring story ever. Still, matching the words with the pictures and focusing so much of the adventure on how cold-blooded and vicious Val is ... one can get into this series. Looking forward to reading the second volume, but still don't think that I could get into reading the weekly strip as it has continued to this day.

Volume 2: 2 Stars -

I came across the perfect description of this series in the introduction to this volume of the collection. It is written as a storyboard for a movie. The main action is shown, but all of the details are left out for the reader to imagine on their own. Any month's worth of material (nothing more than four pages in this collection) would easily create a strong 200 page novel, full of daring-dos and ample character development that is lacking in the comic. While there are quite a few sections that are detailed (the search for Robert of Gaifort is well paced) there are many other sections that miss the elements that would make the novelization so brilliant (the rescue and return of Robert of Gaifort is so short, certain scenes lacked sense as there was not enough background information given).

And so, while Prince Valiant searches lustily (the adverb of the strip) for Aleta, I will bid farewell to the series. I've read enough to know that, yes, it was interesting and there were many fun adventures ... but a single adventure told in sufficient detail would have been worth twenty books full of the beautifully drawn illustrations. No doubt I have missed the mark here, but this summation story telling was not meant for me to read.
