Alchemy has closed a deal for North American rights to Gaspar Noé’s Love.
The sex-fueled 3-D film, which is said to be far steamier than Fifty Shades of Grey, was a late addition to the Cannes Film Festival‘s Midnight screening section. The sure-to-be controversial Love centers on the erotic relationship between a boy and two girls and had rival distributors hot and bothered ahead of its premiere May 20.
The film, written by Noé, had been generating curiosity well before Cannes. Producer Vincent Maraval, no stranger to sexy fare with the 2013 Palme d’Or winner Blue Is the Warmest Color, tweeted a hardcore teaser poster on April 24 that featured a nude woman’s hand clutching a male genital after climax with the tagline “Coming soon.”
The upstart distributor has been on a buying spree at festivals of late, snapping up such films as the Nicole Kidman thriller Strangerland. Alchemy also has another kinky title on its hands with the Patrick Wilson starrer Zipper, about a sex-addicted prosecutor in the vein of Eliot Spitzer (that film was picked up at Sundance).
CAA and Wild Bunch brokered the Love deal.
