A round of layoffs has hit GQ, with seven staffers let go from the venerable Conde Nast men’s magazine. Among them are its entertainment editor, its managing editor and its senior digital editor.
The news, first reported by Women’s Wear Daily, marks the beginning of what is expected to be broader budgetary cuts at the New York-based publishing giant, with further layoffs expected at other titles in its portfolio.
WWD says Glamour could be next in the firing line, with an announcement coming as soon as next week, following its “Women of the Year” event scheduled for Monday.
GQ has seen a nearly 18 percent reduction in ad sales over the same period last year, reflecting trends affecting much of the magazine industry.
Also gone from the GQ masthead are its market associate, business manager and business assistant positions.
It’s all part of Conde Nast’s larger revenue strategy, which involves eliminating and combining certain existing positions, then diverting the savings into digital and live events.
