Jenna Elfman is returning to the small screen.
The Dharma & Greg alum has signed on to star in ABC’s untitled Adam F. Goldberg and David Guarascio comedy pilot, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
The live-action/CGI comedy centers on Alice, a 30-something bachelorette whose life is turned upside down when she finally meets the love of her life — a divorced father with three kids (You’re the Worst‘s Stephen Schneider). This triggers even more upheaval when the slightly unhinged imaginary friend she created as an only child suddenly reappears in her life to help her navigate the transition from single girl to a woman ready for a family.
Elfman will play the live-action Alice, the relationship “expert” with a successful PR firm representing pro athletes. She fears she doesn’t have what it takes to make a serious relationship last, or the maternal instincts to be a somewhat adequate “mom type person.” But a new source of chaos emerges when Alice’s childhood imaginary friend (Mary) returns with her own opinion about what Alice should do. And since “Mary” represents Alice’s deepest darkest fears, her advice is simple: run.
Mary will be a CGI character, with casting underway for a high-profile actress to provide the voiceover. CGI on the potential series will be handled by Disney feature animator Patrick Osborne. Goldberg and Guarascio will pen the script and exec produce alongside their Happy Madison cohort on The Goldbergs, Doug Robinson. Shawn Levy will direct the pilot, which hails from Sony Pictures Television.
For Elfman, the role marks her return to the small screen following Growing Up Fisher, 1600 Penn and Accidentally on Purpose. She’s repped by WME, Brillstein Entertainment and Ziffren Brittenham.
