Preserving Retail and Increasing Affordable Housing in Downtown Brattleboro, Vermont

HUD User publishes a series of case studies based on federal, state, and local strategies that increase affordable housing opportunities and support sustainable community development. The projects and community development efforts featured in these reports have demonstrated innovation through a multitude of partnerships and initiatives.

Opened in 2012 following a multi-year community engagement process, Co-op Plaza has helped retain the only grocery store in downtown Brattleboro, Vermont. The development offers 33,600 square feet of commercial space for the Brattleboro Food Co-op and 24 affordable rental units. The redevelopment effort included remediation of a contaminated site and has addressed stormwater runoff issues with a green roof, a vegetative buffer, and pervious pavement, among other interventions. Co-op Plaza received the 2015 American Institute of Architects/HUD Secretary's Housing and Community Design Award for Creating Community Connections.
