A Day in the Life
Zapp Brannigan is the Captain of the Earth Ship Nimbus and enforcer of the Democratic Order of Planets (DOOP), often doing the bidding of the political figureheads. He is viewed by the public—and more importantly, by himself—as a savior amongst common filth. He has an illustrious military career that has given him credibility throughout the galaxy, though as the show progresses it becomes more and more apparent that this praise is merely out of dumb luck that everything works out in his favor.
He is widely known for making horrible decisions, yet everything going smoothly anyway. His lieutenant is Kif Kroker, whom Brannigan uses as a personal assistant more than of military aide. He is the right-hand man of President Richard Nixon, and thus often sent on seedy missions that usually involve overtaking the planet of a docile species and enslaving them.
The thing most noticeable about Brannigan is his self-imposed sex appeal. Perhaps once a man who got around, Brannigan’s flabby body has long went the way of the dodo, as he has resorted to containing his figure via a girdle. When Brannigan and Kroker were stripped of their rank, they resorted to prostitution to get by. Brannigan attempts to seduce women with pick-up lines such as, “I find the most erotic part of a woman is the boobies.” He suffers from sexlexia, a sensual learning disorder.

Trivia
The part of Zapp Brannigan was originally meant for Phil Hartman, the belated Saturday Night Live comedian who was murdered in 1998. Billy West's characterization of Zapp's voice is an homage to this.
