Automakers build some vehicles with hopes of selling millions of them and succeeding at their business in the eyes of investors. They build others to prove something.
General Motors won’t sell nearly as many GMC Hummer EV models as it will Chevy Silverado or GMC Sierra trucks. The Hummer EV doesn’t exist to sell in the millions. It exists to demonstrate what electric vehicles can be.
The first Hummer EV units to roll out factory doors were, therefore, limited edition models with every imaginable feature. Called “Edition 1,” those were always intended to be scarce.
The company has finished building those, though, and begun filling orders for “lower” trim levels that, frankly, still put on an extraordinary show about what automotive engineers can do with electricity.
They were sold out before the company started building them — shoppers looking for one today are greeted with an invitation to “Sign up to be a handraiser and you will be amongst the first to know when reservations reopen.”
The Hummer EV comes as both a pickup truck and an SUV. Each now gets an EV3X trim with slightly less equipment and a longer range.
In both pickup and SUV form, the EV3X rides on 22-inch wheels wrapped in 35-inch all-terrain tires.
