HONOLULU (Island News) Tony Meredith, world-renowned choreographer and professional ballroom dancer, is bringing ballroom dance to Hawaii with the opening of a new ballroom dance company and studio, Aloha Ballroom Company.
The champion ballroom dancer appeared on Good Morning Hawaii on Sunday, March 31, to talk about Aloha Ballroom that opens in Honolulu on Monday, April 1, 2024. Tony Meredith talks about growing up in The Islands and why he is returning. He says, "I actually spent my childhood living here in Hawaii. I have seen and done a lot in my career and I want to bring dance and my experience back to my stomping grounds in Hawaii. My hope is to elevate ballroom dancing in the Hawaiian Islands, starting with the opening of the new dance studio, Aloha Ballroom Company."
So, what can people expect from the Aloha Ballroom company? Meredith says, "We mostly offer private instruction where you work one-on-one with a professional dance instructor. You can bring a dance partner if you have one but if not, no problem! Your dance instructor will become your partner. Some group classes and social dance parties are also coming weeks. Aloha Ballroom Company is a ballroom and latin dance studio. And those umbrellas of dance actually include about 20-30 different dance styles! Anything from the waltz and tango to salsa, cha cha, swing and so much more!"
Meredith adds that there are many benefits of ballroom dancing. He says, "First, and foremost, ballroom dancing is a great social activity. Learning to dance is a lifetime investment in fun, poise, confidence, improved personality and new friends. Beyond these, ballroom dancing is great physical exercise, providing fun without working at it! Dancing also provides mental simulation. Ballroom dancing has actually been proven to prevent dementia by 76%! No other physical or mental activity comes close."
Meredith’s hope is to elevate ballroom dancing in the islands, starting with the opening of his new dance studio, Aloha Ballroom Company which will be located at 770 Kapiolani Blvd.
Meredith, who is used to catering to the stars, says he will spare no expense to make sure the studio is a decadent experience for every student. "The boutique studio will include a floating dance floor, Swarovski and Chihuly chandeliers The décor of the studio will pay homage to my Polynesian roots. The space will incorporate art which showcases the power of movement through water, mirroring the power of movement we experience through dance," Meredith continued.
Aloha Company Ballroom opens on Monday, April 1st, operating Monday-Friday from 1-10pm. Aloha Ballroom Company provides a professional team of dance instructors that can teach anyone how to dance, from wedding couples looking for first dance lessons to retirees wanting to start a new hobby.
