Call of Duty Loses One of Its Most Important Creatives; David Vonderhaar Leaves Treyarch

The developer, who was part of Activision for 18 years, played a key role in the Black Ops series.

Undoubtedly, the Black Ops subseries is one of the most popular and beloved within Call of Duty. The first installment debuted in 2010 by Treyarch and stood out for its story filled with memorable characters, robust multiplayer, and the Zombies mode. With varying degrees of success, the sequels have also been crucial for the franchise. Unfortunately, one of the most significant creatives behind these titles has left Activision.

We're talking about David Vonderhaar, who joined the ranks of Treyarch back in 2004. His first project was Call of Duty 2: Big Red One, where he worked as the director of online design. Since then, he served as the design director and became one of the most recognizable figures at the studio due to his work on the Black Ops series.

Through a post on his personal LinkedIn account, the designer revealed that today, August 18th, was his last day at Activision. He was part of the company for 18 years and worked on 8 titles. In a message, he thanked the FPS community and his colleagues.

"To my coworkers at Treyarch, I'm immeasurably grateful for the time you spent helping us get better at our craft; never sitting on successes and always wondering how we could improve what we make and how we make it. Thank you to the Call of Duty community for your passion and enthusiasm. That energy often fueled our studio and individual determination. I will always be thankful for the opportunity to engage so many of you directly online and in-person," the creative stated.

Through social media, Treyarch's official account posted a message thanking the developer for his work.

"Farewell to the legendary David Vonderhaar, whose discipline, creativity, and innovation helped shape our games from COD 2: Big Red One to Black Ops Cold War. You'll be missed for your iconic catchphrases and innovative ideas. Excited for your next adventure," the post reads.
