Nice tube! I wish I could have it. This is soviet made F36T8 tube. Made in Ukraine, Poltava by PZGRL manufacturer. You can guess it by crappy cheap single coil filament.

Is this a demonstration tube? Showing the innards and how it works. No cathode guards in the Soviet T8s?

No, soviet tubes never had cathode guards. And this is not a demonstraction tube, it is just a tube with a defect during manufacturing.

New lighting technologies is a pity fest everywhere you look. From LEDs that last only for two months, to a never-ending global starvation of t8 fluorescent tubes.
We shall reinforce ourselves with good old full mercury t12s and HIDs made to surpass one's life, and give them all the middle finger ;

Do Soviet T8 tubes blacken badly at the ends?

Yes, the blackening is really bad in soviet tubes. Because they used cheap unrefined metal wire for filament support, and because phosphor was very bad and full of imputities the sputtering was really siginicant. Dead soviet tubes tend to very, very badly blacken.
