🌱 Exciting Advances in Sustainable Protein Extraction! 🌱 The ALEHOOP project, funded by the Circular Bio-based Europe Joint Undertaking (CBE JU), has made significant strides in the field of sustainable protein production. 🌿 The ALEHOOP project focuses on developing pilot-scale biorefineries that recover low-cost dietary proteins from alga- and plant-based biomass. These proteins are then used to create high-value food and feed products, including snacks, smoothies, meat alternatives, animal feed, and sports drinks. 🥗🍔🥤 🌊 Why macroalgae and legume by-products? These resources offer a sustainable alternative to traditional protein sources. With an increasing global population and growing middle class, the demand for protein has skyrocketed. Europe currently imports over 30 million tonnes of soya annually from the Americas, primarily for livestock feed. However, this reliance on imported protein is neither economically nor environmentally sustainable. 🌎 🌿 Overcoming Challenges: The ALEHOOP project faced several challenges. To address this, the project optimized its biorefinery process and protein extraction methods, ensuring consistent high-quality products. Additionally, regulatory requirements and market barriers related to macroalgae and legume proteins were carefully navigated through safety and quality tests. 🧪 🌱 Aligned with EU Goals. By collaborating with project partners and industry stakeholders, ALEHOOP not only overcame these challenges but also aligned its work with EU policy initiatives like the Green Deal. 🌍 #SustainableProteins #CircularEconomy #FoodSecurity You can read more about this project here:

Without a doubt, innovation is key in our battle against deforestation🌳At SMURF, we're proudly aligned with the FAO strategy: "Forests and Innovation: New Solutions for a Better World". 🍃 SMURF is dedicated to promoting sustainable forest management amidst environmental pressures. Through our innovative solutions, we're conserving Europe's forests for future generations. We're fully committed to leveraging tech for sustainable forestry. Today, at #ForestsDay, let's remember the 6 reasons to treasure our forests, by FAO Forestry. "Our future depends on preserving and sustainably managing our forests". 1️⃣ Forests cover 31 % of Earth's land surface 2️⃣ Forests are vital to achieving sustainable agrifood systems. Nearly 1/3 of the global population depends on forest goods and services for livelihoods, food security and nutrition. 3️⃣ Forests provide almost 75 % of the world's accessible freshwater. 4️⃣ The forest sector generates jobs for at least 33 million people 5️⃣ Forests are vast carbon sinks and sources of sustainable wood, making them key to mitigating climate change. 6️⃣ Forests are essential for the conservation of biodiversity. Forests are home to 80 % of amphibian species, 75 % of bird species and 68 % of mammal species.

There is an increasing interest in alternative sources for bio-active compounds that are both ethical and environmentally sustainable. Shifting focus to eutrophicated environments opens both new avenues for sustainable bioprospecting and addresses ethical, economic, and environmental concerns associated with traditional sources. Bluetools is investigating biomolecules in various marine environments, particularly those that have been underexplored, such as extreme environments. Learn more: https://brnw.ch/21wHxxj
