A small Aquatera team made the short but rewarding trip north to the island of Westray over the weekend to take part in the Westray Development Trust conference, an event about a sustainable future for this most progressive of islands. Back in 1998 a groundbreaking event was organised called ‘life on the edge’ which heralded the start of a wide reaching set of actions that have established and kept Westray at the forefront of sustainable development. A number of these initiatives were in the energy sphere with reused vegetable oil vehicles, EVs, micro turbines, larger scale turbines and community turbines along with house improvements all being part of the mix. The large community turbine has been a particular success generating a local common good fund that has and is serving the community very well. Aquatera senior consultant Anna Mariott presented the interim results of a study looking at potential future development pathways for community wind turbines. Aquatera Group CEO Gareth Davies introduced the ReFLEX Orkney approach to local energy system planning to the island. The outcomes of both initiatives were very well received and it is hoped that discussions can continue at a pace to help move concepts further forwards. The team took the opportunity to take three ReFLEX Orkney cars over to Westray with the hope that anyone interested in EVs might be tempted into a test drive. 6 test drives were provided, each driver and one passenger each, seeking an answer for very different needs. #sustainabledevelopment #innovativeislands #renewablesorkney #westraywindturbine
