My concerns about Boeing's supply chain practice continue. Happy to see that my opinions have been cited in this Forbes article. It is sad to see some whistleblowers of Boeing passed away recently. I hope their concerns will finally get noticed by Boeing. Complaints from employees are normally triggered by something that needs attention. Boeing should take concerns raised by employees seriously. Employees are supposed to be your "human resources" because they may know more than the executives. If firms do not embrace human resources, then they are wasting resources. Time to rethink, redo, and reflect! Young consumers in the #us, #uk, and #eu are in awe with SHEIN's "ultra-fast fashion" that is exceptionally cheap. As Shein filed for #ipo in the US, there are concerns over its supply chain practices ranging from its #sourcing practice, its #supplier's working conditions, and its product #designs. Facing headwinds, Shein announced its "supply chain as a service" to other brands. I argue that it is disastrous when Shein "expands" its operations to offer its excellent "supply chain as a service" to other brands. Why? I am grateful to Barron's for publishing my piece today with brilliant edits by Stevie Rosignol-Cortez and Matt Peterson. Other global brands will not allow Shein to handle their supply chains due to (1) conflict of interest; (2) information leakage risks; and (3) reputation risks. What a privilege to visit and deliver a research seminar hosted by Christiane Barz -- chair of Mathematics for Business and Economics at the University of Zurich, where Einstein received his PhD before his Nobel Prize. I met my old friend Tarkan Tan, and new friends -- Oleg Prokopyev, Sergei Ketkov, Simon Laurmer, Gen Yu, and their postdocs and PhD students from #Switzerland, #China, #France, #Turkey, etc. I presented two research papers -- a joint work with Yiting Deng and Onesun Steve Yoo of UCL and Wei Wang that examined the impact of e-commerce platform entering the market to compete with sellers, and another joint work with Sidika Tunc Candogan (NUS Business School), Philipp Cornelius (Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University), Bilal Gokpinar and Ersin Korpeoglu (UCL) that examined the success factor for entrepreneurs to raise funds on crowdfunding #platforms such as Kickstarter. The questions and suggestions from the audience were illuminating. What is more special is that all students have read both papers and asked shart questions. I am glad I reviewed both papers the night before to avoid embarrassment. The journey to visit Christiane Barz the University of Zurich is another unforgettable experience. I began to explore, learn, and examine humanitarian operations and the UN's sustainable development goals with my long-term writing partner -- Mohan Sodhi (City, University of London). It has been a humble experience because the scale and scope are so vast -- and I know so little. For this reason, it is a pilgrimage to visit the United Nations in #geneva and the Swiss Red Cross to learn about the 1949 #genevaconvention related to the Protection of Civilian Persons in Time of War. Unfortunately, these issues are still relevant today. Between the #unitednations and the #redcross museum, I discovered Gandhi's monument with a shrine in memory of #navany. Engraved below Ghandi's statue is "my life is my message" -- so fitting. Western firms operating in China developed their "China plus one" or C+1 strategy in 2012 to reduce costs when the labor cost in China became much higher than in Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, and India. Their C+1 plans were supposed to be gradual.... But the trade war started by Trump expedited the transition.... Due to political and economic reasons, firms are rushing to diversify their supply base from C+1 to C+n with n > 1. This abrupt change will affect China negatively, but it is also risky for firms to make the change. Efficient supply chains in China took decades to build. Firms must take extra measures to coordinate their moves to mitigate risks. Also, firms must develop contingency plans in case these "n" suppliers do not work out as planned. Is the East different from the West? Economists have long argued that government intervention will stifle innovation. Hence, industrial policies tend to fail. Will this fate continue to hold for green innovations in China? I examined this question jointly with Yiting Deng (UCL), and Wei Wang (International Business and Economics) and we found regulations can spark green innovations in China. Examining the effect of vehicle emissions standards adopted by China in 2016, the study suggests that the rules led to a significant increase in auto-related green patents, especially those for innovations in electric and hybrid vehicles. Delighted to have our joint paper summarized by Michael Totty and selected by the editor Jeffrey Bailey to be featured in the Anderon Review of the UCLA Anderson School of Management.
