𝐎𝐮𝐫 𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐅𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭-𝐓𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐬 We all experience "first times" in life: - The first time we learn to walk - The first time we learn to tie our shoelaces - The first time we learn to swim First times are often the hardest or scariest because that's when we're the most unfamiliar. In 2018, when I first began learning how to coach, I felt defeated. I noticed my coaching style was mechanical; I sounded robotic and monotonous because I was constantly thinking about what question to ask my coachee. I nearly gave up, thinking that coaching wasn't for me. Then, I reminded myself, "Persevere, Matthew. We all have our first times." I've been coaching for 5.5 years now, and I'm delighted to share that I've finally completed 500 hours of coaching practice last week, which is a prerequisite in order to register for the credentialing exam to attain the Professional Certified Coach (PCC) level with the International Coaching Federation (ICF), happening at the end of this month. Praying and hoping I pass the written examination. 😅 Reflecting back, I'm glad I believed in myself and persevered through the difficult and challenging moments in coaching. Now, with the years of practice, I truly enjoy my coaching work and I cherish every coaching session with my clients, helping them to work toward better versions of themselves. Lesson that I learnt from this experience is that in life, we sometimes need to activate our child-like curiosity and perseverance - especially when we encounter first-times. Just as we persevered in learning to walk with our first steps, we should approach our life's pursuits with the same spirit, remembering that "A Persevered First Time Brings About An Inspiring Story." ~ Coaching & Nature ~ This week I've been catching up with coachees from my work last year in NICVA (Northern Ireland Council for Voluntary Action) celebrating & reflecting on what's happened since then. Yesterday we walked and talked in the beautiful surroundings of Montalto Estate where signs of Spring, growth & transition are everywhere. I love spending time outdoors & there is evidence to support the power of coaching & nature. Of course it is not for everyone, bearing in mind client choice, risk & confidentiality, but BACP has some suggestions around how to integrate nature into coaching & for me, these align with the GROW coaching model too: 📌 Use nature as a metaphor, working with the seasons and not against them – the use of nature as a seasonal process offers rich opportunities to explore the changing cycles of life 📌 Take time to consider how the coaching space is decorated. Consider displaying pictures of nature and bringing in seasonal flowers, berries, or pine cones 📌 Work outdoors, although be mindful of confidentiality. There may be times when a walk would help to shift a client’s thinking or feelings in more productive and imaginative ways than can be achieved sitting still in an office 📌 Encourage clients to grow something, to observe the process of growth and to tune in to this as a metaphor for ‘growing’ an idea or project of their own. When we notice the needs of a plant and maximise its conditions for growth, this can facilitate learning about our own nature and how best to respond to our own needs This quote from International Coaching Federation sums it up our human connection with nature nicely: "The awakening of somatic intelligence is the basis of the coaching process. The body is the core medium of human experiences and learnings. It provides orientation and understanding, being a living fabric endowed with intrinsic intelligence. By awakening the inherent knowledge of the body, we allow the coachee to root the development of their awareness within themselves, activating their natural internal compass of self-orientation, empowerment and growth" #connections #coachingconversations #nature #clarity #sowingseeds

In the recent life and leadership potentials training we learned about energy and the impact of our actions on our energy and vice versa. Our beautiful coach Taline Yessayan and our copilot coach Jacopo Conficconi helped us over the course of these 30 hours to understand the fundamentals of energy and life potential. One of my key learnings was to accept that my energy with my family is different from my energy with my colleagues and friends. This is the same for each and every one of us. As I am applying my learnings to bring my whole self with my higher energy to my closest relationships I am learning more deeply the impact of their energy on me. It is easy to build a cohesive positive and stable relationship of professional exchange and understanding with mutual benefits. However when it comes to our loved ones it is difficult to maintain the same energy and exchange with the ones who know us the closest and know where our energy can be elevated and where it can be deflated. As I am learning to use a coaching mindset and skills to help make an impact on self first, I am also learning how to use coaching skills to be mindful where I have my most impact, that is my family and friends and their impact we have on each other. In the meantime, here’s a picture from this morning. I am heading towards another step for mindful and positive energy and impact on my health and my long term health goals ✨ One step at a time, we can build a mindful positive life and overcome our trauma patterns and our emotional blockages to open our heart to a full life ✨❤️

What's the difference between coaching and mentoring? What's the difference between life coaching and business or executive coaching? I had this conversation yesterday with Erika Needleman, a fond friend since last year's The JWE - The Jewish Woman Entrepreneur & Executive conference (yes, the conference also results in new friendships 😁). Erika is a life coach. She shared that The JWE conference is likely a place where more women are looking for business coaching, not life coaching. Maybe. But I told her that some of our business challenges are actually "life" issues. For example, boundaries. Are boundaries a problem with your work? Is there too much work that it doesn't feel like it's possible to implement boundaries? Maybe it's a time management problem? Or maybe you actually have trouble with putting boundaries between your workplace and your personal life for other reasons. Maybe it's from a need to impress others. Maybe it's from a lack of self-respect. Maybe it's something else. Or maybe it really is a work issue. All of us looking to pursue our professional aspirations are looking to excel. Sometimes, we need to learn from others in a mentorship capacity. Sometimes, we need to learn from a peer. Sometimes we need to get a therapist. Sometimes we need a business coach.
