It was fantastic to attend the Net Zero Data Public Utility (NZDPU https://www.nzdpu.com/) Focus Group August Session and to see the immense progress achieved by the team at Bloomberg led by Caroline Watt. It is inspiring to see the development kerb of a platform progressing from the conceptual discussions Assurance, Verification and Data Service Focus Group session in early January this year. I am eager to see the launch of this tool during #cop28uae commencing 30th November 2023. As a professional operating in the decarbonisation space it is clear that standardisation and transparency are foundational to enable transformational change. The NZDPU aims to enable businesses to disclose current and historical GHG emissions data across Scopes 1, 2 and 3, capturing emissions reduction targets and use of carbon credits, and data identifying the assurance and verification of disclosure. The open-data public utility will collect and aggregate net-zero climate transition data by drawing on private sector climate commitments. Guided by the Climate Data Steering Committee (CDCS) Simone Kramer noted that "the NZDPU will bring transparency to efforts to transition to a net-zero economy by addressing data gaps, inconsistencies, and barriers to information that slow climate action". Climate change strategies and carbon emissions reporting are becoming ever more critical to business. Scopes 1 and 2 emissions are already widely measured and reported. Full scope 3 reporting is much more complex to calculate and report, but is required for organisations wishing to set net-zero targets validated by the Science-based Targets Initiative.
