I sat behind the great Thalaivar Rajinikanth on a plane and had no idea who he was! 🤯 What could be my other cultural blind spots as I build a global organisation! 🤔🤨
This past week I visited our growing Global Engineering Centes in India and after landing in Bangalore on a flight from Chennai, I noticed people (including my colleague Karthick) running out of their seats excitedly to take pictures with an older gentlemen sat in front of me. I was perplexed as I had no idea who he was.
When he left the plane, I turned to Karthick and said “who’s that?’” His jaw dropped with shock and he said, “You don’t know! That’s THE superstar’ - it’s Thalaivar…It’s been on my bucket list to meet him in person for the last 40 years!”
I was in shock as I had been sat right behind a man that many South Indian people celebrate and venerate and had know idea who he was - it completely passed me by!
It made me think…in looking after a global organisation and people - what else could I be missing? Could I be overlooking local work norms or culture; people’s specific preferences and expectations or what people are looking for in a company home.
Fascinatingly, Thalaivar is such a big deal to people in South India that many companies gave employees a day off to watch his new release JAILER that launched yesterday!

My major takeaway, is how can I show even greater curiosity about understanding employees and their expectations in different places? How can I ensure that as we shape our employer brand and experience it resonates with people in places we operate.
One thing is for sure, next time I meet the great Thailavar I will know to say “Hello!” and get a picture!
