So, after 38 years with EY (aka, Ernst & Whinney, Ernst & Young, E&Y, and then finally EY), I am excited and grateful to put Retired in front of my title of EY partner as of June 30, 2023. But a little bit on how all this came to be for those that care to know. If you don’t, just skip to the end.😀
On August 19, 1985, a kid (ok, me) from Pitts, Ga., began the most improbable career journey with EY after graduating from UGA. I started in our National office in Washington, D.C., but quickly relocated to Atlanta where I learned the meaning of charged hours – as in, lots of them. However, that experience proved valuable, and I made partner in the summer of 1996 — ironically while our Atlanta office was shut down for the Olympics. (Spoiler alert: nobody much went downtown for the Atlanta Olympics, or at least not near what the people hawking t-shirts and parking spaces had anticipated. But, I digress). I then uprooted my family and took them to Charlotte, NC, in the summer of 1999 where I fortunately played some small part in an amazing growth story of our tax practice across the Carolinas and the Southeast.
The truly remarkable part of my career was that I stumbled into international tax in 1987 when we started an international tax practice hub in Atlanta. At that time, international tax was a high growth practice, and it was professionally challenging. With counsel from several partners, along with all of EY supporting me, I began fostering business and personal relationships with colleagues and clients, and learning how to harness the collective talent of EY to solve client problems.
Ultimately, my international tax specialty allowed me to work with innovative and amazing global companies across many industries. Further, it involved collaborative project work with dedicated and creative people from all over the world – both within EY and at my clients. However, it also afforded me the true gift of international travel and experiencing the world – the beautiful and heartbreaking alike - and learning just how amazingly blessed we are here in the US.
In short, my world started small, but with EY's help, it grew into something much larger than I could have ever imagined. I guess I am living proof that with a combination of a great firm, super clients, amazing colleagues, a supportive family, a little personal grit, and a healthy dose of luck, anything is possible — because that’s the only way I can explain the richness and longevity of my EY career.
So now, I am experiencing the true blessing of a retirement where I am currently relaxing and recharging while I consider my next steps, whether those steps are back to the business world (or not) or simply planning a lunch, a round of golf, or a vacation with friends and family.
So, here’s a toast to all of you that helped me get here, whether as a colleague, a client, a friend, or a loved one. Cheers!!
Let’s stay in touch!!
