Finally established an LLC yesterday after months of waffling about whether or not to keep freelancing full-time. So I guess I'm in it now! LLC paperwork submitted. Domain purchased. Website in the works. Any tips from fellow freelancers and founders? What else do I need to do to protect myself that isn't easily Googleable? P.S. Thanks to Goldenhour for the kick in the butt I needed to make my business more official. April 17th is now my launch deadline. Just couldn't stomach putting "Free Agent" on my badge.
Given how much I pay in taxes as freelancer, my accountant may be dead wrong. But he advised me to stay as a sole proprietor when freelancing. Curious about what made you go with an LLC?.
WAIT you're officially going to Goldenhour?!? We'll get to meet in person?!
Next order of business....hire a bookkeeper to manage Quickbooks for you. I pay a guy $30/month and it has changed my life.
Congrats! As a social expert, I’m sure you’ll do this, but for anyone else in the same boat, make sure to grab handles on alllllll the social platforms (even platforms you don’t plan on using, like Pinterest), and grab adjacent domain names (different dot extensions and even similar spellings). Its no fun when someone steals your traffic by pretending to be you - and even holding it hostage.
Way to go! So excited for you! There's the basic advice of keeping your business finances and personal finances completely separate, of course. And then the new thing to be aware of is the Beneficial Ownership requirements from FinCen. Some big fines for non-compliance with that. Happy to chat through any other questions you might have!
One bit of advice: Don't take a lick of tax advice from the internet.
Congrats! Single member LLC is great. A tax pro can really help you maximize your tax shelter. Happy to chat about my experience with this if you'd like. Either way, keep rockin'!

1moCongrats!! To answer the questions, when you get a good contract and SOW template in place, it makes life a lot easier. We've only had one client not pay us in over ten years of self-employment, but it was early on and we didn't have a good contract in place. It wasn't fun. You might not be able to use your version for bigger clients. Bigger clients will have their own MSA, but being familiar with the legalese and using a lawyer-vetted document gives me peace at night. Also, get a good bookkeeper and accountant! :)
