Can architecture be a responsible refuge, providing comfort but not adding to environmental stress? To paraphrase David Leatherbarrow, how does design not merely show but also truly serve? In my review article for The Architecture Review, I look at how Rajkumari Ratnavati School, built in the hot and dry Jaisalmer region, where summer temperatures soar to 49°C and winter drop to a low of 9°C, meets the environmental objectives and what it could have done more. The takeaway is that demonstrating, verifying, and continuously monitoring building efficiency has become imperative. More than basic climate-responsive principles are required. Al-Manara Business Park New Rosetta City-Egypt Faculty of Engineering Ain Shams University Enviromental Architecture and Urbanism Program 2023 Graduation Project Grade: A Supervised by: Assistant Professor Abdulmoneim Alfiky, Associate Professor Ashraf Nessim, T.A.s Arig Safwat, Hager Magdy "New Rosetta City represents an ambitious mega project poised to emerge as a thriving economic hub, thanks to the diverse range of economic activities in the Rosetta area. The primary objective of this project is to establish a sustainable business center, elevating the city's global prominence and strategically marketing it to attract international investors. Given the prime location of the project, situated at the tip of Rosetta with limited land area, the choice of a mixed-use high-rise building complex is a must. The design concept revolves around optimizing the utilization of space and resources while integrating sustainable features. The key idea of the architectural design is the inclusion of central voids within each tower, seamlessly connected to expansive openings. This deliberate approach significantly enhances passive ventilation, accounting for 60% of the total ventilation and concurrently reducing energy consumption by 20%. This achievement is made possible by capitalizing on the high-speed winds prevalent on the North Coast and using the subtractive design to cultivate a 'sky forest,' thereby mitigating the urban heat effect. Furthermore, recognizing the potential challenges posed by heavy rains and rising sea levels, the project incorporates a flood-resistant promenade as an integral element. This fortification ensures that the project can effectively handle and mitigate the impact of extreme weather events, thereby safeguarding its thriving economic activities."

Architecture, as a profession, has its genesis in all arts and all sciences. Operational domain of profession of architecture revolves around creating buildings which are supposed to be synthesis of aesthetic, technology and humanities. Buildings are designed to provide optimum level of operational efficiency besides ensuring quality indoor environment for end users. Buildings are also known to be large consumers of energy and resources besides generators of waste. When not planned and designed rationally, buildings not only make end users unhealthy and sick but also create imbalance in environment and ecology. Considering large energy implications, carbon footprints, adverse impact on use of resources and promoting sustainability , buildings have to be planned , designed and constructed with great care, caution and sensitivity. Accordingly, role of Architects and profession of architecture assumes importance to create sustainable built environment. Considering  massive growth of population and requirements of creating large number of state of art  buildings, to take care of the basic human needs, profession of architecture is getting firmly rooted and commanding a relatively better acceptance in the post- independence period. With liberalisation of technical education in India and  large number of students  opting for architecture as a career,  number of institutions imparting architectural education have increased manifold. With  rapid growth of institutions, architectural education is facing large number of challenges and issues in terms of quality of education imparted; availability of quality faculty; mushrooming of architectural institutions ; widening gap between education and profession; challenges posed by globalisation and liberalisation ; changing architectural vocabulary;  norms and standards of architectural education and new building materials & construction technologies besides role of the regulatory authorities. Based on the issues identified, paper  attempts  to define strategies and identify best global practices which would help in making architectural education more focussed, more qualitative, more supportive, more productive and relevant to the context.  It would  help  and promote profession, by providing quality professionals to create new order of  built environment , which is cost-effective, time efficient and makes users more productive and healthy besides  creating buildings which are least consumers of energy and  promoters of  global and local sustainability

Architects need to unite and call for change! ✊ Thanks to COA, the architecture profession has become a joke. 😞 This article should be shared as much as possible for architects' voices to reach the COA's ears. 🗣️ The trickle-down impact of the problems noted in the articles is visible; there are few takers of architecture degrees, and more seats are vacant even at the country's best architecture colleges. 🎓 In my opinion, 🤔 The architecture course is like teaching you to make all varieties of cakes without teaching you the basics of running a bakery. 🍰🏭 Today, every TOM/Dick/Harry is an architect and interior designer due to government rules and COA. 😒 The quality of teaching staff is another concerning issue. Many architects, unable to practice as professionals, opt for the more secure teaching path. Unfortunately, many individuals lack practical experience and aren't well-versed in on-site work. Consequently, this leads to a new batch of inadequately trained graduates. A horrible joke is that architects make 15-18k monthly after 5 years of graduation. 😡 Why would anyone take this course? The need of the hour is to cancel the license of all money-minting colleges that are only concerned with fees. 💸 Reduce the number of colleges. Do we really need so many architects?
