Is Semiconductor REALLY The New Oil? The semiconductor industry landed on the Malaysian shore in 1972. Since then it has been growing until what we have today. Malaysia's first oil well was discovered by Shell on Canada Hill in Miri, Sarawak in 1910, but PETRONAS was not incorporated until 1974. In comparison, these two industries are technically peers. However, comparing the salary, oil and gas is far ahead. For example, the starting salary in PETRONAS is RM5,000 across the board while in semiconductors it ranges from RM2,500 to RM4,000 for engineering positions with the same qualifications. That doesn't count any other perks and bonuses. What we immediately need is, salary adjustment to reflect the true value of the people who have been slaving for the semiconductor industry for over 50 years. How can those in Singapore, UK, US, and Germany make a lot more for doing almost the same thing? Even our Chinese counterparts are progressing from being a cheap labor to at par with western counterparts. Your comments are welcome. Hopefully this post reaches those who can make a difference.

Let there be no doubt: Pratt & Whitney Canada’s PT6A series of turboprop engines has dominated the general aviation turbine market since its entry into service in 1964. Over the years, some 47,000 PT6As have been delivered, total flight times are in the neighborhood of 400 million hours, and the engine’s in-flight shutdown rate stands at fewer than three per 1 million hours of operation. Small wonder that most pilots swear the engine is a bulletproof model of reliability. And small wonder that PT6As are the only engines yet certified for single-engine IFR revenue passenger operations. #Turbine #PT6
