A sudden growing interest of automotive brands in managing their own RoRo fleet sounds well done in times of capacity shortage. On the other hand, they will have the issue of selling this capacity to the market, besides their own shipments, which too means competitive automotive brands, difficult as always. It also means, once the volume adjusts, they will be sitting on the overcapacity at severe additional cost. The balancing of all these should take years with consequences for all involved. Not a good sign for the long term RoRo operators. Volkswagen AG did similar when getting involved years ago with #VAGT, not only organizing their own vehicle transports but too operating their own vessels. Little known (usually), Ford Motor Company was even earlier in this, around the 1920's using 'RoRo' vessels in the European short sea trade. As always, interesting times ahead. Even before considering green fuels, a combination of improved design and fuel-efficient features (including wind-assisted propulsion) can deliver a 35% reduction in CO2 emissions. I wonder how easy/difficult is it to retrofit existing ships with wind-assisted propulsion? Dr Sanjay C Kuttan "The new combination carriers ordered can transport both dry and wet bulk cargo. They are more likely to be used on both legs of the journey, and therefore more efficient than single-purpose vessels, the company said. The new carriers are to replace Norway-based Klaveness Combination Carriers’ older vessels, and are expected to reduce overall carbon dioxide emissions by about 35 per cent due to better fuel-efficient features – including wind-assisted propulsion – as well as improved cargo-carrying capacity. “The inherent efficiency of combination carrier design will also help reduce the carbon footprint of the industry due to the reduction of idle sailing,” said Yangzijiang’s executive chairman and chief executive officer Ren Letian." https://lnkd.in/gqNs2Jxe

The study concentrated on Dual-Phase600 steel, considering various batches and sheet thicknesses.
