The industry is buoyed by the success of recently concluded FTAs with Mauritius and Australia, which saw a significant jump in readymade garment exports by 16.8 per cent and 5.7 per cent, respectively, in the first eight months of the current fiscal year. Sudhir Sekhri, Chairman, Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC), expressed optimism about a potential deal with the UK, which currently accounts for 8 per cent of India's apparel exports. Chinese sportswear manufacturing companies that have endorsement deals with NBA players have supply chains that tie back to forced labor concerns in Xinjiang. Being based in Hong Kong, it is gratifying to note that despite little or no government or industry support to the lab-grwon diamonds category, Hong Kong achieved a 38% year-on-year growth in LGD imports from India. It ranks 2nd behind the US and ahead of the UAE. This table reflects the reality that Hong Kong remains an important trading centre for diamonds -lab-grown or otherwise. I was recently told that Hong Kong is the bastion of natural diamond trade with many strong players determined to protect the natural diamond trade to the exclusion of lab-grown diamonds. I do not think such "frog in well" approach will serve to preserve and expand Hong Kong's historical role in the diamond industry. If and when Chow Tai Fook makes the foray into LGD retail, maybe the industry will wake up to the need to embrace lab-grown diamonds. I do hope the Hong Kong Trade Development Council and other government entities will get a head-start on exploring this issue. There is a two-hundred member strong Hong Kong Indian Diamond Association with Indian companies with a long history in Hong Kong so perhaps they can convince the industry to stop playing ostrich when it comes to embracing lab-growns diamonds as an internal part of the diamond trading industry in Hong Kong. The sooner the better !!! To start, lets review the rules on what how we can promote LGD without running afoul of the law in Hong Kong !!!
