Research on unidirectional (UD) tapes is truly interdisciplinary, spanning fields such as materials science, engineering, and manufacturing. One of the key areas of this research is "multifunctionality". There's a burgeoning interest in developing UD tapes with multifunctional properties, such as self-healing, self-sensing, or electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding capabilities, etc. This research delves into novel materials and manufacturing techniques to integrate these functionalities without compromising mechanical performance and recyclability. Xplore recently launched a micro-UD tape manufacturing line, enabling scientists to rapidly develop UD tapes with novel, tailored material combinations. In the video shown here, we demonstrated continuous glass fiber/PP based tape manufactured at a lab scale. Congratulations Nathan Bradshaw, Zoheb Hirani, and Lidia Kuo for this awesome work published in Advanced Materials. In this highly collaborative and thorough project, they developed aerosol-jet-printable films of the covalent organic framework (COF) and nanocomposites with carbon nanotubes for highly sensitive temperature sensors. Thermally activated transport in COF combined with tuning the density of nanotubes just below the percolation threshold was the key to achieving superlative temperature sensing over a broad range of temperatures. https://lnkd.in/gtxYwNuP

I want to highlight this paper, and congratulate the researchers involved, from Friedrich-Alexander Universität and Helmholtz Institute Erlangen-Nürnberg. They have realized a fully printed and stable 19.2 % perovskite solar cell using Dyenamo´s carbon paste as back-electrode. Their work once more confirms the functionality of our carbon paste and opens new paths to identifying the optimum hole transport layer (HTL) for this device configuration by using two different HTLs on top of each other. https://lnkd.in/eUHQnYcP

Shown in this short video is the Xplore Instruments B.V. MC40 Micro Compounder with an unwind station passing a glass fibre tape through a specially designed impregnation die. In this instance they are using a PP blend but imagine what you could achieve with this set up? And all the while making tests fast and with less than 50g of polymer.

Porotech is redefining what is possible for micro-LED displays 💻 Winning the Postdoc Business Plan Competition in 2018, the company co-founded by Tongtong Zhu (CEO), Yingjun Liu (CTO) and Professor Rachel Oliver (CSO) has continued to grow from strength to strength. The company, formally spun out of the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy in January 2020, secured a £1.5 million seed investment in April 2020. By November that year the company had launched the world's first commercial native red indium gallium nitride (InGaN) LED epiwafer for micro-LED applications. In June 2021 Porotech announced a £3 million investment round to fund the delivery of monochrome and full-colour displays on a single InGaN material system. The company reached their technical goal creating 'smart' pixels that could be controlled independently, and in February 2022 Porotech secured their Series A funding round of $20 million. Micro-LED display's will play a vital role in the future of our screen usage, with a GaN-based material technology viewed as the superior system. Until now the requirements for manufacture of full-colour micro-LED displays have been too expensive for mass production, but Porotech's use of a single material system opens the door to the mass manufacture of micro-LED displays. Poised to transform the global display market, we are excited to see what the future holds for Porotech 🌈 #microLEDdisplays #displays #image
