Last week I participated in the 22nd CAREC Ministerial Conference titled "Reinvigorating Regional Cooperation in the Times of Change". It was an honour to present IRU's work on decarbonisation in transport and diversification of economic corridors and show that both are actually closely interlinked. The reduction of border waiting time, which IRU strives for through making transit more secure and facilitated, is directly reflected in an impressive reduction of CO2 emissions.

We are thrilled to announce that on June 9, 2023, the annual regular meeting of the Council for Collaborative Environmental Management (CEM) in Bulgaria took place, with Plovdiv International Airport Company hosting this esteemed event. 📌 During the meeting, new Chair and Vice Chair of CEM for the next two years were elected, in accordance with the forum's regulations. The Chairmanship has been entrusted to SOF Connect AD, while the Vice Chairmanship to BULATSA. ✅Established in 2013 as part of the European "Single European Sky" plan, CEM comprises BULATSA, CAA, Bulgarian civil airports, and airlines. The forum's governing documents have been developed in accordance with EUROCONTROL specifications and approved by the leaders of participating organizations. The key objectives of CEM for the period from 2022 until the end of 2026 are as follows: 1️⃣ Reducing fuel consumption, emissions, and noise from landing and departing aircraft. 2️⃣ Reducing fuel consumption, emissions, and noise from ground operations and promoting the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF). 3️⃣ Enhancing collaboration with local authorities and communities. 4️⃣ Improving compliance with current and future legislation related to the airport sector. ✅ At Sofia Airport, we take our role in environmental stewardship seriously. As the incoming Chair of CEM, we are committed to leading the charge in mitigating aviation's impact on the environment. We will work closely with all stakeholders, including airlines, authorities, and local communities, to achieve these ambitious goals. #SofiaAirport #EnvironmentalStewardship #Sustainability #AviationIndustry #MakingADifference

One of the most highly anticipated developments that happened in 2023 was the confirmation of the EU Sustainable Aviation Fuel mandates through ReFuelEU. We are delighted that Daniel Bloch, International Air Transport Association (IATA) will be joining us to explain who wins and who loses, what is still uncertain after the policy was put in place and look at how we could see EU policy continue to evolve as target dates move closer. Make sure to book your place to join us on the 27-28 February at the Royal Garden Hotel to find out the latest issues and critical topics affecting the ramp up of SAF production. So fellow air and EU lawyers. Let’s get wise together. The French short haul flight ban which received green light based on the EU Commissions (in my view weak) decision below. If appealed in France. And the French court requests a prelim ruling from the ECJ. What will the ECJ say? Has the Commission correctly applied article 20 of Regulation 1008/2008: “Environmental measures 1. When serious environmental problems exist, the Member State responsible may limit or refuse the exercise of traffic rights, in particular when other modes of transport provide appropriate levels of service. The measure shall be non-discriminatory, shall not distort competition between air carriers, shall not be more restrictive than necessary to relieve the problems, and shall have a limited period of validity, not exceeding three years, after which it shall be reviewed.” Your educated views are warmly welcome.

It was an honour for One Sea Secretary General, Sinikka Hartonen, to be invited to speak at the Conference of European Directors of Roads (CEDR) foresight session during the World Road Congress yesterday, where the panellists delved into future scenarios for global supply chains. Under the excellent moderation of Caroline Mays, AICP from the Texas Department of Transportation, the discussion highlighted the importance of multimodality and interoperability in logistics. Unexpected events shake supply chains, and as a result, trade patterns need to be reconfigured. Infrastructure owners and authorities face challenges in responding to these changes since altering physical infrastructure is often impossible. However, effective collaboration and knowledge-sharing between different transport modes can help improve responsiveness and agility. The outcome of the panel confirmed once again that while every transport mode should take steps to become more sustainable, the successful connection of different modes physically and digitally is the key to maximum impact. The audience and the panellists agreed that elements of ESG and sustainability form a solid foundation for future policies and R&D endeavours. A warm thank you to the organisers for inviting the One Sea Association to share insights on the progress in sea transport and how automation and autonomy are shaping the maritime industry. We're on a transformative journey; through forums like these, we can collectively pave the way for a more sustainable and interconnected future in transportation. Today, #AirFranceKLM presented its European Union policy priorities for the 2024-2029 period. To be effective, public policy should accompany the aviation sector in both achieving its climate goals and ensuring its competitiveness. While decarbonization is one of our industry’s biggest challenges, we believe that – given the right tools and incentives – we can be at the forefront of a more sustainable and competitive aviation sector. As we approach the 2024 European elections, Air France-KLM encourages the prioritization of the following areas: ➡ Achieving our climate goals - Air France-KLM is committed to incorporating at least 10% of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) on all its flights by 2030 (going beyond the minimums mandated by EU law). - Decarbonizing European aviation will require developing a robust SAF industry. Flexibility mechanisms, such as a Book & Claim model, can foster the deployment of SAF in the early stages of development where supply is limited. ➡ Ensuring a competitive European aviation industry - Given the global nature of network airlines, climate action should be enacted at the global level as much as possible to preserve a level playing field. - Air France-KLM strongly encourages worldwide ambitions such as the ICAO’s long term aspirational goal on net-zero emissions by 2050. - Air France-KLM supports the promotion of strong European environmental and social standards vis-à-vis non-EU countries. ➡ Continuing to put our customers first Air France-KLM is committed to ensuring clear, balanced, and fair passenger rights for all our customers. - Through our “Air & Rail” product, we are promoting the use of multimodal journeys wherever possible. We believe that passengers should have the freedom to choose their preferred mode of transportation, and that future EU frameworks should encourage that direction.
