Can You Bring on an Intern? From Massachusetts Maritime Academy (Boating / SuperYacht)

Myself and Mark Theissen are working with the Massachusetts Maritime Academy, this is one of the oldest maritime colleges in the United States.

These guys are deep sea ships but many want to get into the yachting industry.

We want to give these kids the potential for internships in the Boating or SuperYacht industry

Cooperative Education (Co-op) Program at Massachusetts Maritime Academy

The Cooperative Education (Co-op) program at the Massachusetts Maritime Academy is a structured educational strategy that combines classroom learning with productive work experiences. These experiences are directly related to the student's academic or career goals, offering a mutually beneficial partnership between students, educational institutions, and employers. Each party has specified responsibilities to ensure the success of the Co-op experience.

Company and Supervisor Responsibilities

  • Orientation and Training: Provide training akin to that given to new employees to help the student become acquainted with the organization.

  • Work Hours: Ensure a minimum of 240 work hours in the student’s field of study.

  • Guidance and Supervision: Offer direct guidance and supervision to support the student’s work experience.

  • Informational Support: Assist in procuring information needed for the student's assignments.

  • Evaluation: Complete and submit an electronic form evaluating the student's Co-op experience. This form will be emailed to employers.

  • Accommodations and some form of pay.

Student Requirements

  • Work Hours: Complete a minimum of 240 work hours as part of the Co-op program.

  • Project: Undertake and complete a project related to the Co-op experience, which will count towards a six-credit project grade. This project should be completed in the student's own time, unless otherwise authorized by the supervisor.

  • Journal: Maintain a daily journal detailing the work experience.

  • Professionalism: Adhere to professional and appropriate dress codes.

Program Policies

  • Performance Issues: In cases where a student's performance is either unsatisfactory or violates organizational policies, the employer has the right to dismiss the student. Prior to any dismissal, a consultation with Career Services is required.

I have been working with MMA for years on these initiatives!! I have even given two lectures on the subject at the academy. They are definitely interested so let’s make this a part of the curriculum!

I love this idea. I’m sure I could take one on. I’ll have to see how it could fit into my program.
