GOD IS LOVE

God doesn’t just have love. It is who He is. God is love. Love is not just something God does; it is who He is. It is a part of His character. We see God’s love in His character. God’s love is not based on whether we deserve it or not. It is not based on condition. He can’t help but love us because He is love. Love is His nature. God’s love has no limits. Nothing can stop God from loving us.

Romans 8:38-39 (AMPC) states, “For I am persuaded beyond doubt (am sure) that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities, nor things impending and threating nor things to come, nor powers, Nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

His steadfast love endures forever. The word steadfast means unwavering, firmly established, firmly fixed in place or position, dependable, changeless, and never failing.

Oh, give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; for his steadfast love endures forever!     Psalm 118:1 (ESV)

God loves us with an everlasting love. God loves us with a perfect love. God is the supreme example of love—pure love. Many people have tied God’s love and acceptance of a person to his or her performance, but God’s love for us is not tied to performance. God loves you independent of who you are and what you’ve done. God’s love for you is not based on your worth and value, but it’s based on His own nature. God’s kind of love is called Agape love. Agape is the love of a perfect being toward entirely unworthy objects. Agape is unconditional, supernatural love. It often has nothing to do with feelings. When God says, “Love your enemies,” it must be done by faith. It is never something we do by feelings. All true love has its source in God. Our ability to love anyone—God, ourselves, or others is dependent on the love of God. We can love only because God first loved us. John explained it this way:

Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because GOD IS LOVE. This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.                                      1 John 4:7-10 (NIV)
