The Sociology team receive the 'Best Course' award

The quality and popularity of Humanities, Languages and Social Science courses at MMU was underlined once again with two fantastic awards – from our very own students!
The Students’ Union Teaching Awards 2014, held this week, saw the Best Course go to Sociology while Languages, Information & Communications won the Best Department.

It’s quite an achievement for Sociology, with more than 800 undergraduate courses on offer at MMU!
The annual awards seek to celebrate the quality of our teaching staff and seek to highlight good practice and reward those outstanding individuals who are preparing students magnificently for future success.

Sociology was rated the best course by scores of students, who commented:

  • “The organisation and management of the programme is exceptional; the curriculum excels and staff are always searching for innovative ways to ensure all modules are as fruitful as can be.”
  • “The teaching is beyond outstanding and the staff always to their best to engage students with the course material, and to adapt to feedback given by students.”
  • “Every level of staff are more than happy to engage with students and to get involved with student projects and ideas.”

Head of Sociology, Professor Gary Pollock, who was joined on stage by excited colleagues, including Dr Tom Brock (nominated for Best Teacher and Outstanding Feedback) and Dr Benedicte Brahic (nominated for Outstanding Feedback) said: “The team is fantastic. I thank them so much for inspiring the students and being there for them, whatever their needs. We believe strongly in creating the right conditions for each of them to succeed."
