Leo has been the class pet for Fort Myers Elementary’s fifth grade class for the last 74 years. As he approaches the big 75, the lizard starts to worry he is nearing the end of his life, leading to a bit of an identity crisis. Suddenly, Leo wants to see the world outside of his terrarium. In a turn of events, he becomes his students’ emotional support lizard. The only problem? He’s told each student that they’re the only person who can hear him.

Squirtle is the classroom turtle. A keen observer of his class, Squirtle is a bit of a curmudgeon. Even though he is sometimes envious of how much the kids love Leo, he’s also a loyal friend who will go to great lengths for his terrarium companion.

Ms. Malkin is one tough substitute teacher. When she starts off the year ready to teach her students the meaning of discipline and responsibility, the kids worry she is going to ruin their last year of elementary school. But thanks to Leo — who reminds her that she, too,  is special — Ms. Malkin slowly remembers why she became a teacher.

Jayda is the popular girl in class and uses that to overcompensate for some of her insecurities — she puts too much pressure on herself to live up to her parents’ standards. Leo helps her relate more with her peers and make new friends when he reminds her that “we’re all just people — and lizards.”

The school principal is an exuberant character who thinks Ms. Malkin is doing a great job with the kids, blissfully unaware of the lizard shenanigans occurring right under his nose.
