Warning: The following contains major spoilers for all episodes of Echoes on Netflix.

What Happened in 'Echoes'?

At the beginning of Echoes we are introduced to Gina McCleary, a successful author who lives in Los Angeles with her husband Charlie Davenport (played by Daniel Sunjata). She is forced to travel to her hometown of Mount Echo when the husband of her twin sister, Leni, calls to tell her Leni is missing.

Leni and her husband Jack Beck (Matt Bomer) lead a very different life to Gina and Charlie, running a farm and raising their daughter Mattie.

It is later revealed that Leni is not Leni at all—and is not missing. The sisters have switched lives every year on their birthday and the "Leni" who has disappeared is actually Gina, who has put in place an elaborate plan so she can run away with her high school boyfriend, Dylan, whose baby she is carrying.

Dylan and Gina were together when they were teenagers but broke up after a church that they were having sex in caught on fire. A man who had been sleeping in the church died. Leni convinced Gina to break up with Dylan, blaming him for the blaze, though it is later revealed that she set the fire herself because she resented Dylan for taking Gina away from her.

We also find out that, when they were children, Gina took the blame for pushing their older sister Claudia over a railing when it was Leni who did it. The fall led to Claudia needing a wheelchair and ruined her relationship with Gina.

Gina tried to distance herself from Leni as a teenager, moving to Los Angeles, meeting Charlie and embarking on her career as an author. The twins became pregnant at the same time but Gina lost her baby and after Leni gave birth to Mattie she began suffering from postnatal depression and almost let the baby drown. Concerned for Mattie's safety, Leni and Gina used the life swap plan so Gina could look after the baby and Leni could recover in LA.

Then, a year before her disappearance as "Leni," Gina found out that her sister had pitched a book to an agent about her miscarriage. She also discovered that her husband Charlie had known all along about her and Leni switching lives, and had been writing about it. This led to Gina feeling betrayed by her sister and her husband as she began her year in Mount Echo. Then came a chance encounter with Dylan…

What Happened at the End of 'Echoes'?

In the final episode of Echoes, Gina and Leni escape from their childhood home, which has been set on fire, leaving the body of their father Victor inside. Victor died minutes before the fire started, because of a heart condition.

Gina is desperate to get away from her sister, realising that she has been trying to control her life since they were children—and even murdered Dylan to try to stop Gina running away. Leni stalks Gina through the woods and tells her she wants it to be just the two of them again.

They end up fighting in a river and Leni reveals to Gina that, years earlier, she saw their father murder their mother by drowning her in the bath (which explains the drowning flashbacks we have seen throughout the episodes). Gina then tells Leni that Victor had drowned his wife at her own request; she was sick and wanted to die on her own terms.

This revelation shocks Leni, as her mother's death has been the reason she has wanted to keep Gina so close all these years. She begs Leni to "come back" to her but Gina refuses and throws herself over the waterfall.

We then cut to Leni being interviewed by the police and it is revealed that Gina is presumed dead. Leni is now under suspicion for the murder of the man in the church years earlier.

Leni makes a run for it and manages to catch a flight to Australia using a fake passport that Gina had had made when she was planning to run away with Dylan. A woman working at the airport asks Leni if she was at the airport a few days earlier. She says a woman who looks just like Leni had boarded a flight, hinting that Gina is still alive and has managed to get away.

Fans will remember that during her final year living as Leni, Gina was learning how to dive. She and Dylan practiced diving in wild waters so her training would have served her well when she landed at the bottom of the waterfall.

At the end of "Echoes" one of the twins visits Gina's husband Charlie Davenport, but which one? Netflix

The scene then cuts to Charlie at a book reading, narrating a passage. He has written a book about his experiences with Leni and Gina. A woman—Leni or Gina—arrives at the reading wearing a big hat and sunglasses and asks Charlie if Gina's body was ever found. Later, the same woman enters Charlie's house and he is not surprised to see her.

Charlie asks the woman if it was her at the book reading and she says no, but we are never sure if she's telling the truth. Charlie tells her: "I'll find out, you know, which one you are."

The woman replies: "Maybe. Maybe I don't even know anymore."

She hints that the story is not over as she tells Charlie she has "so many scores to settle." The series ends as she adds: "Starting with you, Charlie."

So, was it Leni or Gina who visited Charlie? And was the same woman at the book reading or have both twins returned? The answers remain a mystery for now, but the final scene does leave the door open for a Season 2.

All seven episodes of Echoes are available to stream on Netflix now.
