Funeral services for George Burton “Buster” Smith, 67, of Arnoldsville, will be Thursday, June 2, at 11 a.m. at Winterville Cemetery. Mr. Smith died on Monday, May 30, at Piedmont ARMC, of complications of kidney cancer.
Born on March 11, 1955 in Charleston, SC, he was the son of Georgia and Ardell Malpass. He had the good fortune to be adopted, along with his sister Rebecca and brother Larry, by Pauline and Roy Smith of Athens.
Mr. Smith had a 26-year career with Dupont. He was a softball player on church and recreational teams for many years. He was a Boy Scouts of America leader and served on the board of the NEGA Football Conference. For 16 years he was President of the Athens Youth Organization.
Surviving are his wife of 46 ½ years Luann Moats Smith, son Ben Smith (Lauren), and daughter Lindsey Barner (Scott), and grandchildren Frank and Amelia Liguori, and Montana, Carolyn, Scottie-Marie, and Wade Barner. Also surviving are his sisters, Ann Wise (Ted), Dot Icenhour (David), Rebecca Leewee (Jim), and brothers Larry Smith (Annette), Joe Malpass, Frank Malpass, and Lee Malpass. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Gene, Robert and David Malpass.
Pallbearers will be Scott Barner, Timothy Crowe, Reid Coley, Noah Coley, Frank Liguori, Dylan Anglin, Chance Coley, Wade Barner, and Ty Crowe. Lord & Stephens Funeral Home East is in charge of arrangements.
