L.A.'s Uh Huh Her earns affection from Culture Room crowd

Christina Mendenhall

L.A.-based duo Uh Huh Her (comprised of Camila Grey and Leisha Hailey) returned to South Florida on Friday night for an intimate show at the Culture Room. The last time Uh Huh Her graced a stage in South Florida was in 2008 when they played at Miami’s now defunct Studio A. The group has grown up a lot since that performance.

Most of Uh Huh Her’s setlist came from their new EP Black and Blue and the yet to be released album Nocturnes. The duo is known for touring to promote an album prior to dropping the full-length release (they also did this with the 2008 release of Common Reaction). It’s hard to know if the fans even cared that they were listening to new material. Most of the fans just seemed happy to see the two talented ladies on stage rocking out. The highlight of the night was when Grey told of her encounter with local love bugs: “We saw a bunch of bugs that looked like they had two heads but then we found out that they were (mating). So these bugs actually f*** to death?” She added that they don’t have bugs like that where she lives. At one point in the show Grey and Hailey switched instruments with Grey taking the bass and Hailey taking on the lead guitar. The switch was seamless and just one more example of how brilliant these two musicians are.

Highlights from the set included “Never the Same”, “Black and Blue”, “Philosophy”, “Fascination”, and “Not a Love Song” (the only song played in the encore).
