Ontem morreu um dos grandes arquitetos da musica brasileira. J.T.Meirelles, saxofonista, flautista e arranjador. Criador do que seria conhecido como samba-jazz. Líder do grupo Meirelles & Os Copa 5, que tem essas duas pedras preciosas que colocarei para todos baixarem por aqui.

João Theodoro Meirelles começou sua carreira profissional aos 17 anos, tocando no conjunto de João Donato. Depois de uma breve passagem por São Paulo, retornou ao Rio de Janeiro e formou o Meirelles & Os Copa 5, fazendo temporadas memoráveis no Beco das Garrafas, em Copacabana. Em 1963, com apenas 23 anos, escreveu arranjos para o disco de estréia de Jorge Ben, inclusive “Mas Que Nada”, primeiro grande sucesso do artista, que depois, virou hit no mundo todo.

Meirelles & Os Copa 5 gravaram dois discos na carreira. Considerados clássicos mór do samba-jazz. Em “O Som”, de 63, o grupo era formado por Luiz Carlos Vinhas, Dom Um Romão, Manoel Gusmão e Pedro Paulo. Em 64, em “O Novo Som”, Os Copa 5, vieram com outra formação, tão grandiosa quanto a anterior: Eumir Deodato, Edison Machado, Roberto Menescal e Waltel Branco. Esses dois discos são obras-primas da nossa música, e deveria ser objeto de estudo em salas de aula de todas as escolas do Brasil. Faz parte da nossa história. 


Na década de 60, pequenas multidões se acotovelavam para, nas boates do Beco das Garrafas, ouvir um dos músicos mais brilhantes de sua geração. Se mudou o mundo ou a música, nem vale a pena perguntar. Meirelles, este sim, mudou – e muito – em quase 40 anos: brilhou intensamente na cena do samba-jazz que ajudou a inventar, retirou-se nos arranjos de encomenda quando achou que não tinha lugar para um trabalho autoral e, finalmente, vendeu seus instrumentos e deixou a música de lado por cinco anos.

Yesterday he died one of the great architects of Brazilian music. JTMeirelles, saxophonist, flutist and arranger. Creator of what is known as samba-jazz. Group Leader Meirelles & The Copa 5, which has these two gems that fall for all to put here.
John Theodore Meirelles began his professional career at age 17, playing on the set of Donato. After a brief stay in St. Paul, returned to Rio de Janeiro and formed Meirelles & The Copa 5, making memorable seasons in the Lane, in Copacabana. In 1963, only 23 years, he wrote arrangements for the debut album from Jorge Ben, including "Break It Off," the first great success of the artist, who later became a worldwide hit.
Meirelles & The Copa 5 recorded two albums in his career. Considered classics of the Mor samba-jazz. In "The Sound", 63, the group was formed by Luiz Carlos Vines, Dom Um Romao, Manuel Gusmão and Pedro Paulo. In 64, "The New Sound", The 5th Cup, came with another formation, as great as the previous one: Eumir Deodato, Edison Machado, Roberto Menescal Waltel and White. These two albums are masterpieces of our music, and should be studied in classrooms of all schools in Brazil. It is part of our history.

In the 60s, small crowds jostled for in the clubs of the Lane, listen to one of the most brilliant musicians of his generation. If you changed the world or the music, not even worth asking. Meirelles, but this has changed - a lot - almost 40 years, shone brightly in the samba-jazz scene who helped invent, withdrew arrangements in order when he thought he had no place for a copyright work, and finally sold their instruments and left music aside for five years.
