Herberger's starts going-out-of-business sale

Shoppers started taking advantage of Herberger's going out of business sale Saturday, April 21, in St. Cloud.

Pedestrians in downtown St. Cloud will now be greeted by red, yellow and black signs declaring Herberger's is going out of business.

The sales that usually accompany that news have begun. Signs in-store and online declare that everything must be sold at "total liquidation prices."

The store's parent company Bon-Ton Stores Inc. announced Herberger's stores nationwide are closing earlier this week.

Herberger's has been a downtown fixture in St. Cloud since 1927, but had changed hands multiple times since it was founded by Bob Herberger. The retailer's headquarters were located in downtown St. Cloud until 2000, when management was consolidated out of the area, causing the loss of 260 jobs.

Now the retailer's closure will leave a big hole in St. Cloud's downtown scene.
